Description
Français : Cette huile sur toile compte parmi les dernières œuvres réalisées par Alphonse de Neuville. Ce peintre académique influencé par Eugènde Delacroix (1798 - 1863) est, avec Édouard Detaille (1848 - 1912), un des principaux représentants de la peinture militaire de la fin du XIXe siècle, en se spécialisant dans les scènes relatant la guerre franco-prussienne de 1870. Dans cette œuvre, A. de Neuville, qui a bénéficié de son vivant d'une véritable reconnaissance publique à travers son plus célèbre tableau "Les dernières cartouches" (1873), toute la composition témoigne d'une volonté de servir la Nation, en peignant les héros tragiques de la défaite, celle de la bataille de la Lizaine de janvier 1871, qui aurait pu peut-être changer le cours de l'histoire en débloquant Belfort.
