Below the portrait is an inscription reading: "Edura fortis fata refringero, / ut docta callens jura Machaonis; / Artesque Phoeboeas salubri / mente PARACELSUS elaborat. / Eheu laborans! nec tamen irrita / Decreta reddet: lurida perbrevi / Mors decolorabit, facemque / Purpuream solvet favilla."
