Shinwell was born in London, but moved to Glasgow with his family when he was 11. He was a socialist and campaigned with trade unions for the 40 hour week before being elected as Labour MP for Linlithgow in 1922. Shinwell served as financial secretary for the War Office in 1929, Secretary for Mines (1930-1931), Minister for Fuel and Power (1945-1947), Secretary of State for War (1947-1950), Minister of Defence (1950-1951) and was made a Baron in 1970.
