Portrait Miniature of Charles Brandon, 3rd Duke of Suffolk (1537-1551), son of Charles Brandon, 1st Duke of Suffolk, and Catherine Willoughby. Miniature by Hans Holbein the Younger, vellum mounted on playing card, 5.7 cm in diameter. Royal Collection at Windsor Castle.
Charles Brandon and his brother Henry (right) were tutored first by Thomas Wilson and later, with Edward VI, by John Cheke. Henry inherited his father's title in 1545. The brothers went on to St John's College, Cambridge, but they died of the sweating sickness in 1551. Since Henry died about an hour before his brother, Charles is deemed to have succeeded him as Duke of Suffolk. (John Rowlands, Holbein: The Paintings of Hans Holbein the Younger, Boston: David R. Godine, 1985, ISBN0879235780, pp. 151–52.)
