Robert College was founded in 1863 in İstanbul by Cyrus Haimlin and Christopher Robert. The school began its education program in the theology building of the American Missioners Commission. The first wing of the school was built with the same stones as those used in Rumeli Fortress and opened in 1871. The affiliated American Girls College was inaugurated in the same year in Arnavutköy and these two institutions became the first American educational institutions founded outside of the United States. In 1971, the college level of Robert College was converted to Boğaziçi University. The same year, Robert College merged with the American Girls College to continue its activities on the Arnavutköy campus.
