English: Attendees at the "Gurus Party" at the 1984 Summer Usenix Conference (Salt Lake City, UT). Please comment if you can identify people.
Dennis Ritchie stands in the center (glasses, striped sweater). Steve Bellovin, in a hat, is standing in front of Dennis. The head peaking out just to the left of Steve Bellovin's hat is Bob Miles. To Dennis' left is Andy Tannenbaum (the lessor or portrait mode - a.k.a. trb, not to be confused with Andy Tanenbaum the greater of MINIX fame or Andy in landscape mode).
Behind trb is Bob Masters and Tom Teixiera. Crouching in front of Steve is Eric Allman. To Eric's left, Andrew Hume is crouching and making a snowball. Standing behind Andrew, Clem Cole is doing something suspicious with a can and a cup. To Clem's left is Donn Seeley. To Clem's right is Mike Karels. On Mike's right is Eric Finger. Crouching on the left is Peter Langston (long hair). Nancy Blachman is standing behind Peter. To her right is Andrew Koenig. Others include Erik Fair (tall) between Nancy and Dennis. Chris Torek is partially obscured by Erik. Way in the back, between Andy and Clem, Eric Schmidt is almost entirely obscured. On the far right, Sam Leffler is holding a bottle. Looking over Sam's right shoulder is Bruce Borden (face only). To Bruce's left is Greg Crowe from Davis Polk & Wardwell. Mark Seiden is squatting by Clem, holding a can.
I (or others) may be able to add others (and edit this sentence out) over time. Spencer Thomas and Jay Lepreau (deceased now) must be standing there, but my memory is hazy what they looked like at the time.
Taking a stab at four others: To Nancy's left that seems like it is Perry Flinn with the beard and hair parted in the center. Also it looks like Jim Mcginness directly in front of Clem, and that could be Jay with the camera looking back. Give who all is in the picture, it would make sense that would be Terry Hayes between Teixiera and Finger, but Eric's hair is obscuring too much of the face for me to be sure.
The guy in the front row with the hat and the camera is Doug Kingson (then of the US Army BRL and now I think with Morgan-Stanley). The person in the striped shirt on the left (behind the woman in the sweater) is Ron Natalie (also then of BRL, now of Sensor Systems). Former BRL-er, then with Northrop, Robert Miles is the head in the back row just to the left of Steve Bellovin. Also partly obscured by Andy Tannenbaum's head is Mike Muuss, leader of the BRL group.
It has been asked: How come everyone in this photo is smiling except Dennis Richie? trb responds "That's easy. Because we were with Dennis, and he was with us."
