Summary

Description

The scallop ( Pecten maximus ) is a bivalve mollusc found in temperate European waters, from Norway to Spain. This photographic series shows its tentacles and eyes: the scallop has the particularity of having up to 200 blue-green eyes. Located on the edge of its mantle, which covers the entire circumference of the mollusc, its eyes measure up to 1 mm in diameter and are built like multiple concave mirrors reflecting light towards the mollusc's retina: they thus allow it to have a very wide field of vision.
