Within hours the Sydney Roosters, of whom he is club co-captain, released a short statement stating that they had advised the NRL’s Integrity Unit of the incident and would conduct an internal investigation. The NRL in turn asked the Roosters for a report into the incident.<ref name="ABC dog vid"/><ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.nothingbutleague.com/2016/01/27/club-statement/ |title=Club Statement |publisher=nothingbutleague.com |date=27 January 2016 |accessdate=27 January 2016}}</ref> Early on 28 January it was reported that the Roosters would strip him of the captaincy, fine him $50,000 and amend his contract to allow immediate sacking in future, while the NRL could suspend him for six months.<ref>{{cite news |url=http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3418714/Sydney-Roosters-NRL-star-Mitchell-Pearce-caught-video-performing-lewd-act-dog.html |title='It should end his career': NRL adviser slams Mitchell Pearce for his 'disrespect towards women' after the Sydney Roosters captain is filmed simulating sex with a DOG and urinating on himself |work=Mail Online |date=28 January 2016 |accessdate=30 January 2016}}></ref> Later the same day it was reported that Roosters and the NRL would discuss the possibility of him being sacked. <ref>{{cite news |url=http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-01-28/mitchell-pearce-stripped-captaincy-lewd-dog-video/7119568 |title=Sydney Roosters, NRL to discuss sacking Mitchell Pearce over lewd dog video |publisher=ABC News |date=28 January 2016 |accessdate=28 January 2016}}</ref>
On 29 January an emotional Pearce read a statement to the media which included these words: "I would like to unreservedly apologise to everyone for my actions. My behaviour was unacceptable. I'm embarrassed and take full responsibility for my actions. I acknowledge I have a problem with alcohol and it is something I have to address. It is not an excuse but a realisation that I finally need help." The Roosters announced on the same day that Pearce had left Australia for treatment in an "intensive rehabilitation facility for an extended period".<ref>{{cite news |url=http://wwos.ninemsn.com.au/2016/01/29/19/38/pearce-roosters-drug-use |title=NRL investigates possible Roosters drug use |publisher=Channel Nine Wide World of Sports |date=29 January 2016 |accessdate=29 January 2016}}</ref><ref>{{cite news |url=http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-01-29/mitchell-pearce-entering-rehabilitation-in-overseas-facility/7126348 |title=Mitchell Pearce entering intensive rehabilitation facility overseas after admitting to alcohol problem |publisher=ABC News |date=29 January 2016 |accessdate=29 January 2016}}</ref>
