In an attempt to circumvent the spirit's threat, Hoogmoed presses the destitute locals into working in his newly opened gold mine, where many of the workers suffer catastrophic accidents or are chased out of the cave by the "Witte Wieven" and her supernatural cohorts. After the Baron is called out of his office to tend to an emergency in the mine shaft, mine overseer Laars will help guests into his specially designed mine elevator vehicles that are capable of traveling both vertically and horizontally. After the guests board the special mine cars, Laars and the machine shop are suddenly attacked by vengeful spirits of miners who have previously vanished under the influence of the "Witte Wieven". Before Laars's office apparently explodes, he sends the miners out of the mine; as the car ascends, a giant fireball bursts from the opening of the machine shop and almost reaches the rear car of the train. As the train is about to leave the mine, it stops as the "Witte Wieven" can be heard singing from the pit, from which smoke pours and lights can be seen. After a few seconds, the "Witte Wieven" scream, "You shall not evade my curse! Prepare to forfeit your lives!" as the miners plunge down the exit of the mine. ==Personnel== * Story/Plot - Jacques Vriens * Music - Brussels Philharmonie * Composer - René Merkelbach * Vocals - Paul van Gorcum (Baron Gustave Hooghmoed) * Vocals - Anneke van Giersbergen (the Witte Wieven) * Construction - Bolliger & Mabillard * Head of engineering - Mark Jansen * Designer - Sander de Bruijn ==Ride== Guests to the Efteling theme park take on the role of one of Hooghmoed's employees; the queue begins with guests crossing an iron bridge over a creek to the mine's central offices and barracks, where guests will have an audience with the headstrong Baron who will, via an application of projections and animatronics, give his newly minted employees a brief safety lecture before sternly warning them against believing in the legend of the "Witte Wieven". Guests will move on from the office into the mine's machinery and maintenance shop to board the special mine cars. The spirits suddenly attack the cars; this effect is achieved through projection technology and animatronics (projected ghosts fly over rider's heads, and several pipes seem to burst.) As the train is about to drop off the lift, it stops as the "Witte Wieven" can be heard screaming from the pit, from which smoke pours. After a few seconds, the riders plunge 37.5 meters into a smoke-filled pit and pull out into an Immelmann loop and return into the same direction. After the first loop, riders experience airtime and drop a second time. This later leads the riders into a zero-g roll before traveling through a fast-paced spiral. The final brake run follows, which leads into the mine complex's equipment storage area, where guests disembark. The exit hallway is still themed and leads to a cafe named 't Melkhuisje (literally the milkhouse). This is due to a tradition in which miners would generally have a glass of milk after hours of labor work in the mines. <gallery> Baron 1898 aanbouw 7-12-14 b.JPG|December 2014. Jochem, upon spotting the map of the world spread out upon the table before the older man, started a conversation with the stranger, who shared that he was to board a ship sailing for South America in two days in order to meet up with the love of his life, but no known road route would get him there in time, and the ship would set sail without him. Just when the weary man was ready to give up, Jochem stated that he knew of a much faster way, through the Boggy Marsh and the Tall Forests; as soon as these words left the young man's mouth, the entire tavern fell silent and the faces of the travelers who had only moments before been radiating hope changed out expressions of glee for looks of pure terror, for everyone in that area of the Netherlands knew the feared Witte Wieven claimed the area as their domain and dragged any intruders down into the ground to be their eternal companions in whatever dark dimension they inhabit. Jochem's love interest, Doortjie, pleaded with him to not allow the tired man to entertain such dangerous ideas as traveling through the cursed home of the Witte Wieven, but the man would hear none of her foolishness and laughed at her. After some further discussion as to how much compensation the young man would receive for his efforts, the lovesick older traveler and the young tavern keeper's apprentice went off along the treacherous road, picking their way through the foreboding Boggy Marsh before entering the great and terrible Tall Forests, which were considered to be the very center of the Witte Wieven's domain. After walking along the road for many miles the two came across a great dark cave, that was known to all of Holland as the Witches' Hump because it was said that the Witte Wieven dwelt within its large chambers. A manic glint of excitement beyond any Jochem had ever known came to the man's eyes, and he insisted that they enter the dark cave. At the very moment the mysterious man issued his command, a great gust of piercingly cold wind met Jochem's body and he fled in great fear for his own safety. The road-worn traveler, on the other hand, took no stock in superstitions or myths, and laughed to himself as he sauntered towards entrance into the black abyss. Deeper and deeper he went, until he felt as if he had walked for hours; finally he came upon a great golden nugget sticking out of a wall, but when he attempted to chisel away at the surrounding rock to free his prize, a great white fog enveloped the man, and his terrified screams reached to Jochem's ears from deep within the earth as he fled from that terrible place. Some years later, Jochem had married the beautiful Doortjie and had replaced his father as the master of the tavern. One day, as Jochem was about to go clean the bar-top, a rather haggard-looking, yet distinguished, old man came in and hastily set a crudely-drawn map on the table in front of him. Jochem, who made it his business to know all of his guests, walked over to the man and looked at the odd map of a cave system the man had set out before him; as he produced a monocle from his worn coat, the man asked, "Curious, boy?" He then slowly turned to face the young man and said simply, "I'm going to start a goldmine." He had a wild look in his eyes, and Jochem was reminded of the poor traveler he led to his doom at the hands of the Witte Wieven all those years earlier. Jochem couldn't believe his ears, and was stunned into silence as he gazed at the man's map. Seeing the young lad's reaction to the revelation that this once quiet village was to become a bustling industry town, the man looked him in the eye and said, "Hooghmoed is my name." Before a week had passed, the Baron Hooghmoed and his men quickly began to transform the Witches' Hump into a gold mine the likes of which had never been seen in all of Holland. True to his spectacular style, the Baron's massive mining complex would feature a massive steel lift tower as its centerpiece along with state-of-the-art construction and only the finest luxuries for Hooghmoed's miners. However, the project was not without trouble, and soon workers began to complain of strange occurrences within the dark passages below the Earth. The great mist attributed to the Witte Wieven was a constant presence in the tunnels, and the remains of those who had been foolish enough to dare disturb the habitat of the Wieven were found within the rock. Still, the Baron paid the legends no mind, and when his miners began to vanish, he simply started pulling in new employees from towns and villages further afield, where the legends of the Wieven had less of a hold on the imaginations of the people. Jochem witnessed a meeting between the wealthy Baron and a few foreign investors, and when their meeting was interrupted by a group of miners who burst from the complex screaming about the terrors of the mine, the Baron angrily threw a piece of crumpled paper at him as he stalked away. Jochem picked it up and discovered that a great celebration would be held later in October to mark the successes of Hooghmoed's goldmine and the prosperity its gold fueled. Jochem hurried back to the tavern and informed his wife of the planned event, and they both eagerly awaited the day. When the celebration finally came, the Baron had granted permission for Jochem and his wife to stand in the front of the crowd to repay their kindness they had shown when they boarded the transient workers under Hooghmoed's employ and supplied the crews with delicious meals. The Baron finally took his place on the front steps of his great mining complex and proudly exclaimed, "I am here to announce that the great goldmine that sits beneath our feet, the very mine that was once considered to be a place of great horrors and home to vicious spirits, is finally mined! In honor of the hard work and dedication that all of you put forward to help this mine succeed, I have constructed the shaft lift tower to be the most magnificent in all of Holland, and it can be seen for miles away! I name it.... Baron, 1898!" At this, he pointed up to the great wrought-iron latticed tower standing above the crows and throwing its shadow across the land. "But before we begin our revelries, I would like to make a very special request of someone here, someone who deserves all of the credit for the discovery of this great source of wealth." The Baron glanced around the sea of faces before calmly asking to no one in particular, "I have heard the rumors that this mine is the home to many terrible things, and to put your fears to rest I shall take a descent into the deep shaft myself, but I will ask that a special friend join me in the lift. Jochem, would you care to join me this time as I enter the caves?" Immediately Jochem, was overcome with great emotion; the traveler he had surely condemned to a terrible fate so long ago had not only survived the Witches' Hump, but had finally banished the Witte Wieven and was now about to prove it to the whole town, so that no one would ever again fear the mine. Immediately the young man ran to his old companion, and the two of them entered the great building to much fanfare. As they entered the lift, Jochem asked the Baron why he never went to South America; the Baron looked knowingly at Jochem and said, "I had only been searching for my life's love; here, I have found it." Jochem wanted to learn more from the Baron Hooghmoed about what he'd seen that fateful night so many years ago, but just as he opened his mouth to speak the lift began to plummet at unthinkable speeds down towards the depths of the great mine. Jochem could no longer contain his joy and yelled in excitement; the Baron simply smiled. Finally, just when it seemed that the shaft could possibly extend no further, the lift came to a stop and Hooghmoed led the young man along the dark passage to a place where a bright golden nugget was embedded in the rock wall; it was the very same nugget of gold the Baron had found so many years earlier, and he knew it was only right for the two of them to unearth it together. However, as the two of them began to chip away at the rock wall with picks, a terrifying screams suddenly echoed from deeper within the vast maze of tunnels, and a thick fog rose up from the ground. The Mine Baron and Jochem fled the approaching mist, but they were stopped when a terrible explosion was heard and the tunnel shook so violently that the beams holding the ceiling up came down, and with them the roof of the tunnel. As the crowd outside the building danced to merry music and enjoyed the wonderful food, the gaiety was interrupted by a great explosion and a massive cloud of dust that shot out from the building's entrance and enveloped several tables of food. "It is the Wieven," the guests shouted, "come back to exact their vengeance upon the Baron in return for his disregard for their home! Alas, he and any others with him are surely doomed." And at this, they ran as fast as they could for the safety of their homes so that they might be spared the wrath of the enraged Wieven. However scared she was, Doortjie felt that her duties lay with her husband and the Baron, who had been so kind to them, and so she took up a pick and ran to a mound of rock that had formed on a nearby slope. For a great deal of time, the Baron and Jochem sat in the darkness and contemplated their fate, but soon they could hear the clang of metal against rock. Doortjie had finally reached her beloved and the man who had given the town fame, and as they were rescued, the Baron sighed, "This place is where I found my life's dream." As the Baron walked away, Jochem released that his wife had not only saved him from the Witte Wieven, but from the tainted gold as well. Right away, Jochem and his wife realized that their place was no longer in the village they had known their whole lives; life was too short to spend it all confined to one place. Jochem next met the Baron as he walked by the mine, and as they passed the Baron handed him a small leather bag which contained the golden nugget and his old map of the world. "I hope that you will find more on your journey than I did on my own" he said, somewhat mournfully. And that was the last either party saw of the other. However, Hooghmoed was not discouraged from his pursuit of gold, and soon he began to makes his workers a very generous offer; whatever they found in the mine, they were entitled to keep half of it as a payment. So you just need to ask yourself, is the Baron's offer good enough for you to risk your life in the mine? ==History== ==Personnel== * Story/Plot - Jacques Vriens * Music - Brussels Philharmonie * Composer - René Merkelbach * Construction - Bolliger & Mabillard * Head of engineering - Mark Jansen * Designer - Sander de Bruijn ==Ride== Guests to the Efteling theme park take on the role of one of Hooghmoed's employees; the queue begins with guests crossing an iron bridge over a creek to the mine's central offices and barracks, where guests will have an audience with the headstrong Baron who will, via an application of projections and animatronics, give his newly minted employees a brief safety lecture before sternly warning them against believing in the legend of the "Witte Wieven". In an attempt to circumvent the spirit's threat, Hoogmoed presses the destitute locals into working in his newly opened gold mine, where many of the workers suffer catastrophic accidents or are chased out of the cave by the "Witte Wieven" and her supernatural cohorts. +One Winter's day in 1893, an unknown traveler who had been to faraway lands and seen many wondrous things was staying at a tavern on the road to Amsterdam, where he met young Jochem, the son of the tavern owner. -After the Baron is called out of his office to tend to an emergency in the mine shaft, mine overseer Laars will help guests into his specially designed mine elevator vehicles that are capable of traveling both vertically and horizontally. +Some years later, Jochem had married the beautiful Doortjie and had replaced his father as the master of the tavern. Seeing the young lad's reaction to the revelation that this once quiet village was to become a bustling industry town, the man looked him in the eye and said, "Hooghmoed is my name." +Before a week had passed, the Baron Hooghmoed and his men quickly began to transform the Witches' Hump into a gold mine the likes of which had never been seen in all of Holland. Deeper and deeper he went, until he felt as if he had walked for hours; finally he came upon a great golden nugget sticking out of a wall, but when he attempted to chisel away at the surrounding rock to free his prize, a great white fog enveloped the man, and his terrified screams reached to Jochem's ears from deep within the earth as he fled from that terrible place.', 4 => 'Some years later, Jochem had married the beautiful Doortjie and had replaced his father as the master of the tavern. Seeing the young lad's reaction to the revelation that this once quiet village was to become a bustling industry town, the man looked him in the eye and said, "Hooghmoed is my name."', 5 => 'Before a week had passed, the Baron Hooghmoed and his men quickly began to transform the Witches' Hump into a gold mine the likes of which had never been seen in all of Holland. Jochem hurried back to the tavern and informed his wife of the planned event, and they both eagerly awaited the day.', 6 => false, 7 => 'When the celebration finally came, the Baron had granted permission for Jochem and his wife to stand in the front of the crowd to repay their kindness they had shown when they boarded the transient workers under Hooghmoed's employ and supplied the crews with delicious meals. The Mine Baron and Jochem fled the approaching mist, but they were stopped when a terrible explosion was heard and the tunnel shook so violently that the beams holding the ceiling up came down, and with them the roof of the tunnel.', 8 => false, 9 => 'As the crowd outside the building danced to merry music and enjoyed the wonderful food, the gaiety was interrupted by a great explosion and a massive cloud of dust that shot out from the building's entrance and enveloped several tables of food. Doortjie had finally reached her beloved and the man who had given the town fame, and as they were rescued, the Baron sighed, "This place is where I found my life's dream." As the Baron walked away, Jochem released that his wife had not only saved him from the Witte Wieven, but from the tainted gold as well.', 10 => false, 11 => 'Right away, Jochem and his wife realized that their place was no longer in the village they had known their whole lives; life was too short to spend it all confined to one place. Jochem next met the Baron as he walked by the mine, and as they passed the Baron handed him a small leather bag which contained the golden nugget and his old map of the world. "I hope that you will find more on your journey than I did on my own" he said, somewhat mournfully. And that was the last either party saw of the other.', 12 => false, 13 => 'However, Hooghmoed was not discouraged from his pursuit of gold, and soon he began to makes his workers a very generous offer; whatever they found in the mine, they were entitled to keep half of it as a payment. So you just need to ask yourself, is the Baron's offer good enough for you to risk your life in the mine?', 14 => false, 15 => '==History==', 16 => , 17 => , 20 => '* Construction - Bolliger & Mabillard', 21 => 'The exit hallway is still themed and leads to a cafe named 't Melkhuisje (literally the milkhouse). This is due a tradition in which miners would generally have a glass of milk after hours of labor work in the mines. <gallery> Baron 1898 aanbouw 7-12-14 b.JPG|December 2014.
