The Institute provides personalized coaching for the [[Union Public Service Commission|UPSC]] (NDA) written [[entrance examination]]. The training and the [[curriculum]] at the SPI is formulated so that the young men are automatically prepared to appear before the [[Services Selection Board]]'s (SSB) interviewers. After [[National Defence Academy (India)|National Defence Academy]] (NDA) was established at Khadakwasla, Pune in 1954, it was observed that though NDA was in Maharashtra, Maharashtra was not in NDA as the number of Maharashtrian boys getting in to NDA was minuscule. The Government of Maharashtra decided to form a committee to study the issue in depth and suggest the solutions and methods that could address this issue. Accordingly a committee was formed under the chairmanship of [[S. P. P. Thorat|Lt Gen SPP Thorat]], (Retd), [[Kirti Chakra]], [[Padma Shri|Padmashree]], DSO, [[Doctor of Letters|D’Lit]]. On the recommendations of the committee the unique Services Preparatory Institute was established at Aurangabad in 1977 with the aim of preparing boys academically, mentally and physically for entry into the National Defence Academy and other Defence Academies. SPI is a dedicated feeder to the National Defence Academy (NDA) and the [[Indian Naval Academy|Naval Academy]] (NAVAC). The Institute aims to send maximum boys to the NDA / NAVAC. Hence the stress is on complete education and all-round personality development. The Institute provides personalized coaching for UPSC (NDA) written entrance examination. The aim of the institute is to prepare the [[Cadet]]<nowiki/>s to succeed in UPSC (NDA) written Entrance Examination, SSB interview and to build their physical and mental abilities, so as to be an asset to the nation. The SPI is located at Sector N–12, CIDCO, Aurangabad in a well established & green Campus of 10 acres. The Institute comes directly under General Administration Department (Desk – 28) of the Government of Maharashtra. It has a dedicated and experienced staff of 24 who looks after the training, discipline and also the welfare of the cadets all the time and provides a caring and homely atmosphere. SPI is headed by the Director who is a retired [[Indian Armed Forces|Armed Forces]] Officer of the rank of [[Lieutenant colonel|Lt Colonel]] and above and the equivalent ranks of Indian Navy & Indian Air Force. The unique feature about the SPI organisation is that it works under the exclusive guidance of a governing body which comprises of very senior retired officers of Indian Armed Forces i. e. The SPI is headed by the Director who is a retired Defence Officer from the Indian Armed forces. SPI has well experienced Staff of 24 employees. SPI is a dedicated feeder to the National Defence Academy (NDA) and the Naval Academy (NAVAC). The Institute aims to send maximum boys to the NDA / NAVAC. Hence the stress is on complete education and all-round personality development. The past record speaks volumes about its success. A lot of emphasis is given on academics. The cadets are encouraged and trained to score high marks in 12th board examination. This ensures that they get a chance in Technical Entry Scheme (10 + 2) of Army & Navy in addition to NDA entry. The Institute has so far trained 1040 cadets out of which 466 have joined the Defence Services in officer cadre (112 fighter pilots in Air Force, 82 in Indian Navy). It works out to 45 %. A very high percentage when compared to National Average. 2 of SPI cadets have been awarded Kirti Chakra, 3 cadets Shaurya Chakra and 14 cadets have been awarded with Sena Medals/ Vayu Medals for their gallantry. The cadets who could not/did not join Armed Forces have established themselves in highly lucrative careers in civil life. The infrastructure consists Office Complex, Sports fields, Cadets hostel, Cadet Mess, Gym Hall, staff quarters etc. SPI has two air conditioned class rooms for conducting evening extra classes for UPSC with audio-video gadget/projection facilities. Assembly Hall is a place for brain storming, where every day morning news reading, lectures, group discussions etc are conducted. The hall is equipped with latest audiovisual gadgets. SPI has a Medical Inspection room where an [[Doctor of Medicine|MD]] doctor attends sick report twice a week. In case of serious cases, cadets are referred to hospital for treatment. The expenditure of hospital & treatment has to be borne by the parents. It also has well equipped mess & dining hall where a balanced & hygienic [[diet]] of minimum 3200 calories is provided. The cadets are accommodated in well furnished and comfortable rooms @ 2 to 3 cadets per room.
