"Dui Bigha Jomi" (দুই বিঘা জমি, English: Two Bighas of Land) is a Bengali poem written by Rabindranath Tagore. The poem narrates a peasant's love towards his land. The poem was an inspiration to the story of Hindi film Do Bigha Zamin, directed by Bimal Roy.
Synopsis
The poem is written in first-person narrative. Upen is a poor peasant and he has nothing but "Dui Bigha Jomi" (Two Bighas of Land). A rich zamindar of his village makes a conspiracy against him, files a false lawsuit and evicts him from his land. Upen, being unable to fight against the powerful zamindar, leaves his place, becomes a disciple of a sannyasi, and starts travelling to different places as a homeless person. Several years pass and Upen return to his place. Once he enters the village, old memories start coming back to his mind. He enters his own land, which was stolen by the zamindar. He sits beside a mango tree. He recalls how he used to play around the tree in his childhood. Suddenly two mangoes fall from the tree. Upen considers this as a gift from the tree to him. At this point, the zamindar's gardener enters, without recognizing who Upen was (the real owner of the land), he accuses him of stealing fruits and takes him to the zamindar. The zamindar also fails to identify Upen. He and his friends also insult Upen and call him a thief.

He and his friends also insult Upen and call him a thief.<a href="#cite_note-Mookerjea-Leonard2017-2">[2]</a>
