Stalder is an accomplished Professor in the Department of Animal Science at Iowa State University (ISU), USA. Dr. Stalder's research program is focused on sow longevity, management, applied nutrition, and genetics. He teaches courses in swine science, animal breeding, genetics, and various graduate level courses. == Early Life and Education == Dr. Stalder's journey in Animal Science began early with dairy cows and swine in FFA and 4-H, at his childhood farm. His interest in genetics was peaked by the belt on a Hampshire pig because its white belt would show up in the same spot almost identically each time after breeding. Dr. Stalder grew up in Brighton, Iowa attending Fairfield High School. Upon graduating high school, he continued his education at Iowa State University with the intent of earning an Associates Degree in order to return to the family farm. As he was in school, he realized that he wanted to do more than work on the family farm, and continued his education. He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree majoring in Animal Science in 1987. He then went into the workforce at a co-op in Northeast Iowa for three years, where he realized his love for the statistical side of research. In 1990, he attended Western Kentucky University to earn a Master of Science Degree working under Dr. Gordon Jones. In 1995, he received a PhD degree at Iowa State University with Dr. Lauren Christensen. == Career == Dr. Stalder has been very involved in swine research. Throughout his career, he has researched nutrition, management, and genetics. His notable research from Iowa State University is his work with sow longevity. This research is more extensive than anywhere else in the world. He enjoys his work on sow longevity, but he also enjoys the creativity in finding novel ideas in projects such as the behavior in piglets when given heat mats. He has made a major impact since he has started his career in the animal industry. The greatest impact he has had on the agricultural community has been his gilt leg soundness poster. This poster has been translated in many different languages. His work has been utilized on many farms throughout the world. Along with his research he has taught many classes in both Tennessee and Iowa. These have included animal genetics, swine science, advanced swine science, poultry and swine breeding, graduate courses, statistic software for biological sciences, and seminars for graduate students. He enjoys extension and likes to develop spreadsheets for producers through extension.   '
