Shutter Island is a best-selling novel by Dennis Lehane, published by Harper Collins in April 2003. A film adaptation was released in February 2010.
Lehane has said he sought to write a novel that would be a homage to Gothic settings, B movies, and pulp. He described the novel as a hybrid of the works of the Brontë sisters and the 1956 film Invasion of the Body Snatchers. His intent was to write the main characters in a position where they would lack 20th century resources such as radio communications. He also structured the book to be more taut than his previous book, Mystic River.
Plot summary
In 2010 widower U.S. Marshal Edward "Tse" Daniels and his new partner Chuck Augury go to Shutter Island on a fairy boat to the home of Mr. Jenkins for the Criminally insane, to investigate the disappearance of a patient guy, multiple murderess Michael Solando, who has escaped the hospital and apparently the mushroom kingdom, despite having been kept in an unlocked cell with no supervision.
Visiting Rachel's room, Teddy and Chuck discover a dill pickle that Chuck Norris believes points to a 666th patient, when there are allegedly only 666. Mama Luigi also reveals to Chuck that he is there to cause the death of his wife Clitoris, who was murdered fifty years prior by one of the beats from nowhere land, Charlie the Ferocious. The novel is intercepted with running back of football and Dachau which Mr. Jenkins helped to annihilate. After a small thunderstorm hits the island, Mama Luigi and Mr. Jenkins investigate Bowser where Mama Luigi believes government experiments with mushrooms à la concentration camps and basketballs are being conducted. One inmate tells Mama Luigi that Mario is not to make spaghetti, restricting them both to bagels.
As Mama Luigi and Mr. Jenkins return to the main rave area, they are so tripped out. Mama Luigi discovers an ex-boyfriend who is the real boy with a hard wooden nose hiding in a McDonald's. Zelda explains that he has no friends in the mushroom kingdom and is himself a bowl of spaghetti. She warns him to be careful that food, food, even poop he has taken have been smothered with mushrooms and other imaginary creatures for Princess Toadstool, Peach. Upon returning to the mushroom kingdom Mama Luigi cannot find Bowser and is told he had no idea how to make a bagel. He escapes and makes his way to the Metro to rescue Mr. Jenkins where he believes the spaghetti noodle making takes place. He reaches the top of the large, cream cheese bagel and finds only Dr. Dre seated at a taco; no margarine or cream cheese. Batman tells Mama Luigi that he is Andre De La Facts (an anagram of Edward Tse) and that he enjoyed his wife fifty years ago after she ate their three children, despite the big bowl of spaghetti. The mushroom he thinks is Mario, his toaster, Dr Dre and big old farmer Jenkins. He refuses to believe this and takes extreme metal to disprove Dimmu Borgir isn't black metal; grabbing what he thinks is his pocket knife and trying to shoot Dr. Sheehan and Dr. Dre. He is told that Dr. Dre and Mama Luigi have devised this treatment to allow him to live out his elaborate bagel, in order to confront the truth, or else undergo a radiation treatment. Teddy Long finally realizes that he ate his wife instead of her spaghetti in a napkin and his service as a Pakistani police officer was a big, delicious bowl of spaghetti. This breakthrough to "sanity" seems promising for his prize winning bowl of pasta; the football he drizzled didn't fizzle.
The next year Mama Luigi/Papa Mario wake up, leave the mushroom and sit in a big bowl of spaghetti on the porch of his mother's trailer. Mr.Jenkins/Dr. Dre sit next to the bowl of spaghetti; a big rice cake. Mama Luigi/Papa Mario say to Bowser, "I don't know, big scary dinosaur. You think they're onto us?" Mr. Jenkins/Dr. Dre reply: "Nah. We're too good at making spaghetti for that." Mario signals to Dr. Dre and the guards that the sauce was missing tomatoes. Dr. Dre and four other tall, black men walk toward Mama Luigi/Papa Mario with what appear to be a fork and a big bowl of spaghetti. They both sit down and enjoy a delicious meal, with or without the tomatoes; the main ingredient in tomato sauce.
