This diocese was formed by the partition of Kottayam Diocese in 1982. The first metropolitan of ''Idukki Diocese'' was ''Late Lamented'' His Grace [[Mathews Mar Barnabas]]. He took all initiatives to bought the land at [[Chakkupallam]] and constructed the metropolitan's house named Gathesemon Aramana. Mar Barnabas took the duty of the undivided American diocese in 1992 . The Idukki diocese came directly under the control of the then Malankara Metropolitan H.H Baselios Marthoma Mathews 2 . H.G Mattathil Dr Mathews Mar Severios was appointed as assistant in 1992 till 1994 when H.G Kolathukalathil Paulose Mar Pachomios was appointed as assistant metropolitan of Idukki till 2002 when he became as the Metropolitan of the newly formed Mavelikkara Diocese . Alukkal Dr Abraham Mar Severios became the assistant metropolitan Idukki in 2002 . But in 2004 he went back to the patriarch faction . H G. Thazhamon Augen Mar Dionysius became the diocesan metropolitan in 2004 but he passed away soon in 2007. During his time , the diocese grew well . The Then Malankara Metropolitan H.H Baselios Marthoma Didymos 1 became the diocesan metropolitan of Idukki . The then Catholicos and Malankara Metropolitan designate H.B Kollannur Paulose Mar Milithios became the assistant metropolitan of Idukki in 2007 till 2009 A new chapel and aramana building has been constructed and consecrated in the year 2008 by H.B Paulose Mar Milithios Metropolitan . In 2009 H.G Punchayil Mathews Mar Theodosios became the diocesan metropolitan of Idukki . In 2019 he was granted leave from the duty to reside in Bethany Ashram ,Ranni Perunadu to have meditation for some time . In 2019 The then Malankara Metropolitan H.H Baselios Marthoma Paulose 2 became the Metropolitan of Idukki and he appointed H.G Dr.Mattathil Mathews Mar Severios who once became the assistant metropolitan of Idukki before to be the assistant metropolitan to the Catholicos. H.H Baselios Marthoma Paulose 2 passed away in 2021 and H.G Dr Mattathil Mathews Mar Severios was enthroned the Catholicos and Malankara Metropolitan as H.H Baselios Marthoma Mathews 3 . Thus he became the Metropolitan of Idukki as the Malankara Metropolitan . In 2021 he appointed H.G Sankarathil Dr Joshua Mar Nicodimos as the assistant metropolitan of Idukki . ==Geography== The parishes in the diocese scattered across large geographical area.
