Since childhood he was attached to his older brother, Choi Hak-joon. He also has a nephew, Choi Si-On. When he was 10 years old, he was chosen along with little actress Park Eun-Bin (My Extraordinary Attorney Woo), to perform a political ceremony on the border between North and South Korea. Because of that, both child actors made Korean headlines, and 3 international headlines: CNN, BBC, and NHK. The ceremony was held to symbolize the border peace on the Gyeongui Line with the Donghae Line. Park Eun Bin played the first North Korean civilian to cross the ceasefire line and Choi Tae Joon played the South Korean who happily welcomes his neighbor. After finished High School, he studied at Chung-Ang University where he obtained a degree in Theater. He is very good friends with South Korean rapper Zico, and with actors Ji Chang-wook, Nam Joo-hyuk, Choi Si-won, and singer Chanyeol from Exo. His best female friend is actress Lee Sung-kyung whom he has known since they were children and lived close to each other. The singers and actresses IU and Sooyoung are his good friends too. He has been a model for the runway, K-Pop music videos, and for different commercial brands. For the Buckaroo brand he was cast alongside AOA's Seolhyun, with whom he worked on a TV production.
