Ramarao Indira (born 22 April 1952) is an Indian sociologist who lives in Mysuru.
She had her school and college education in Mysuru and joined the University of
Mysore as a faculty in the Department of Sociology in 1972 and continued to teach
and engage in research in the department until her superannuation in the year 2014.
In her career spanning 42 years at the University of Mysore, she held such
positions as Chair of the Department of Sociology, Director of the International
Centre, and Honorary Director of the Centre for Women's Studies. She is currently
Professor of Eminence, School of Social Sciences, M.S. Ramaiah University of
Applied Sciences, Bengaluru. She is also Visiting Professor, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar
Chair at the University of Mysore. Her other academic assignments include a
Visiting Fellowship at the Department of Sociology, University of Johannesburg,
South Africa, University of Delhi, and Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati and
Scholar-in-Residence position at the Kuvempu and Bangalore Universities. She has
mentored Study-India Programmes of Florida International University, University
of Iowa, Cornell University, University of Puget Sound, University of Delaware,
Allegheny College, Princeton University, Lady of the Lake College and University
of Michigan, USA and Mount Alison and Guelph Universities, Canada.

For the past four decades, Indira has been engaged in research focusing mainly on
gender issues, role of women in forest management, girls' education and building
capacities of women in institutions of local self-governance, among others. She is a
two-time Fulbright Scholar, four-time Shastri Fellow, and a Senior Fellow of the
ICSSR. Her research work with forest dependent communities in the Joida region
of Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka State with a special focus on women's
empowerment initiated many reforms in a region that had been sidelined by
development projects for several decades. She has to her credit more than 20
research projects sponsored by Shastri Indo Canadian Institute, Karnataka Forest
Department, Karnataka Evaluation Authority, United Nations Democracy Fund,
UNICEF, and Ministry of Welfare, GoI. Indira has guided and mentored a number
of research students and young faculty and is credited with building a research
culture in the department through her people-centric research projects and also by
training students to undertake studies on themes of social relevance.
