It was established in 1977 by the Government of Maharashtra with the objective of preparing students for careers in the Indian Armed Forces. The institute focuses on academic, mental, and physical preparation for the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) National Defence Academy (NDA) written examination, as well as the Services Selection Board (SSB) interview. Students of the institute pursue their higher secondary education (11th and 12th grades) at Stepping Stones High School in Aurangabad, affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). Previous batches of cadets have attended Government Arts and Science College at Kille Ark, Aurangabad (GASCA), and Padmashree Shankar Bapu Apegaonkar English School, Aurangabad (PSBA), for their academic studies.
