He become a vital member of the squad, helping them win promotion to the Premier League in 2009. ==Club career== ===Gillingham=== Born in Middlesbrough, Jarvis started his football career in the youth academy of Millwall. He was later on released by the club and went on to join Gillingham as a trainee in 2003. On the 4 November 2003, aged 17, Jarvis made his first Football League debut in a match as a substitute against Sunderland, as most of the senior players in the squad had come down with influenza. His next first team appearance came in an FA Cup defeat to Burnley on the 24 January 2004. He went on to feature regularly in the 2003/04 season for his side , making two starts and eight substitute appearances for Gillingham in his first season. He also continued to play for the youth team, helping them reach the last sixteen in the FA Youth Cup. Shortly before the end of the season Jarvis signed his first professional contract when Andy Hessenthaler offered him a three-year deal. In the 2004/05 season, Jarvis became a regular in the Gillingham first team, making 30 football league appearances. He missed some action in January and February as he was out injured for five weeks undergoing a Hernia operation. Jarvis scored his first league goal for the club against Wolverhampton Wanderers on the 30 October 2004. The 2004/05 season ended badly for Jarvis as he saw his side relegated from the Football League Championship into League 1. In the 2005/06 season he carried on to become a regular for Gillingham, scoring seven goals for his side, his best tally to date in a season. Jarvis carried onto be a regular for Gillingham in the 2006/07 and displayed great form, which lead to the club offering him a new contract, but he rejected the offer. Gillingham described this the most lucrative offer they have ever made to a player of his age. Jarvis went onto say that he would be happy to stay with Gillingham if the club could “match his ambitions”. He went on to attract the attention of various Championship clubs with Ian Holloway of Plymouth Argyle making a bid for his services, but it got rejected by the club. Next to make a bid of £650,000 were League One Side Nottingham Forest, but this got rejected by the player as he wanted to play Championship football. Finally Championship side Charlton Athletic made a bid for Jarvis at the end of the season, but this got knocked back as he had already agreed a deal to join another club. Jarvis was named in the PFA's League One Team of the Year and Chairman Paul Scally stated that Jarvis had the potential to play for England by the time he was 24. ===Wolverhampton Wanderers=== Jarvis rejected a further contract improvement from Gillingham and joined Wolverhampton Wanderers in June 2007, signing a two-year deal with the option to extend his contract by a further year. The two clubs agreed a transfer fee, but the fee was never disclosed. Jarvis first season with Wolves was a mixed one as he suffered a hip injury during pre-season, but he returned midway through the season producing some impressive displays over the second half of the season. He made his debut as a substitute for Wolves against Charlton on 20 October 2007. He made his first start for Wolves against Barnsley on the 4 December 2007. His first goal for the club came against Leicester City on 22 December 2007 at Molineux. He finished his first season with Wolves making 27 appearances, scoring one goal. Jarvis had a blistering start to the 2008/09 season but went onto pick up a hamstring tear against Championship side Reading on 30 September 2008, which kept him out of action for two months. He returned on 6 December 2008 as a substitute against QPR. He remained to be a first team regular throughout the rest of the season and helped his side gain promotion to the Premier League. He made a total of 28 appearances, scoring three times. His three goals came against Bristol City, Blackpool and Derby. In the 2009/10 season, Jarvis made his Premier League debut against West Ham United on 15 August 2009 at Molineux. He went onto feature heavily for Wolves, featuring in 34 of the 38 fixtures in the league, missing only four league games. He went onto score three goals in his first Premier League season which came against Burnley, Hull City and West Ham. Jarvis also grabbed another goal against Tranmere on 3 January 2010 in the FA Cup, winning the game 1-0. Jarvis excellent form throughout the season saw him keep his side in the Premier League. In the 2010/11 season Jarvis excellent form continued, which lead to Wolves offering him a new contract. He signed a new five-year contract extending his stay at Molineux until the summer of 2015. So far in the season Jarvis has picked up four league goals. These goals have come against West Ham, Blackpool and two against Aston Villa, both home and away. He also picked up another goal against Doncaster on 18 January 2011 in the FA Cup, winning the game 5-0 at Molineux. His impressive form for Wolves earned him a call up to the full England squad on 20 March 2011. ==International career== Jarvis was called-up to the England national squad for the first time in March 2011, after making it into the previous three provisional squads. He was selected in the squad to face Wales in a Euro 2012 qualifier and Ghana in an international friendly. He is the first Wolverhampton Wanderers player to be named in a full England squad since Steve Bull in 1990. ==Personal life== Jarvis' parents, Nick and Linda, both played table tennis professionally and each reached number one in the sport's British rankings. Later they set up the table tennis supplies company Jarvis Sports, which relocated from Guisborough to Guildford in the same year that Jarvis was born. ==References== 2 ==External links== *Official site profile *36722 <!-- Metadata: see Wikipedia:Persondata --> pl zh good article ar:ماثيو جارفيس be-x-old:Мэт’ю Джэрвіс de:Matthew Jarvis es:Matthew Jarvis fr:Matthew Jarvis it:Matthew Jarvis pl:Matthew Jarvis pt:Matthew Jarvis sv:Matthew Jarvis zh:馬菲·查維斯'
