''''Sayyed Mohammad Sarwar Waez''' (say-yed, mo-ham-mad, sar-war, waa-ez) was one of the most distinguished Shia scholars of the twentieth century Afghanistan. He was born in Behsood, Aghanistan (1916 – 1980). Ayatollah Waez was truly one of the shining beacons of knowledge and the breadth of his intellect covered countless aspect of Islam and theology. Unfortunately due over 40 years of non-stop conflict and 30 years of War in Afghanistan and geo-religious politics this great figure has mostly remained unknown beyond the region. The respect and reverence that he had garnered among the Afghan public (Shia and Sunni) kept the monarch rulers nervous. They saw his justice seeking and fairness philosophy as threat to their system of rule and jailed him to prevent formation of any revolutionary opposition. A decade and a half later his forthright and public defiance of the Russian-backed Marxist government landed him twice in jail. ---- == Early Life == In 1925, Mohammad Sarwar Waez was born in the village of Kajaab, located in the second district of the city of Behsood, in the Wardak Province. There are no records for the month and day of his birth. He opened his eyes in a family that was economically very humble, yet socially admired and respected in the community. His father Sayyed Hasan Reza recognized the academic aspiration in his child; therefore he motivated Sarwar to pursue a life of learning and scholarship. He registered the young boy in school and due to his high learning aptitude he was able to excel on all subject matters. While studying he continued to help his father in daily farming chores to support the family’s livelihood. In the years that followed, his father decided to send the young Sarwar to Kabul in order to expand the young man’s educational opportunities. He spent some years in Kabul and studied literature, theology, logic, and a portion of religious jurisprudence and doctrine (Fiqh and Usool). After some years he returned to his birthplace and built a school that attracted many students. He taught and orated in his community and quickly made a name as a skillful speaker. The community began to refer to him as Waez (skillful speaker). The name became so common that he proudly began to wear that name as respect to the community. == Education in Najaf Iraq == After few years of teaching in Kajaab and delivering bright students out of his school he decided to leave for Hawza in Najaf to seek higher level of Islamic studies. He studied under respected and well-known scholars of Islam, Ayatollah Hakim and Ayatollah Khoei. As a student of these two great scholars Waez reached the level of Ijtihaad. Under the direction of Ayatollah Hakim he returned to Afghanistan. After staying in Kabul for about 6 years he returned to Najaf for further research. He stayed there for about ten years and completed his most well known publication in two series knows as Mesbah-ul-Usool , which is one of the most studied and referenced texts in the areas of Usool (jurisprudence).
