The Institute of Business Administration (ব্যবসায় প্রশাসন ইনস্টিটিউট) of the University of Dhaka - commonly known as IBA - is a one hundred percent government funded institution for business-education in the South Asian Country of Bangladesh. It was established in 1966 in collaboration with the Karachi IBA, the Ford Foundation, and Indiana University, Bloomington but is currently only affliated with the University of Dhaka. Late Professor M.Safiullah was the founder-director of IBA.
Founder
Professor M. Safiullah is considered the pioneer of business education in Bangladesh. During the Pakistani period Bangladesh (the then East Pakistan) did not have any institution giving MBA degree. Professor M. Safiullah dreamed the need of such education for Bangladesh and organized support to start IBA. The first group of faculty who later provided leadership to business education includes Dr. Mawdudur Rahman, Dr. Alimullah Miyan, Dr. Rahim Talukdar, Dr. Hafiz G.A. Siddiqui and Dr. M. Shamsul Haque. All had MBAs from Indiana University, USA. Until 1971, there were seven faculty advisors from Indiana University to help in the development of the Institute.
History
From its inception in 1966 until 1993, the Masters of Business Administration (MBA) was the major academic program offered by IBA. In 1993, after a review initiated by Professor Dr. M Shamsul Haque (Former Director, IBA; and former Treasurer, Dhaka University), a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) program was added.
IBA has so far had 17 BBA batches and 43 MBA batches. In 2007, IBA replaced its Evening MBA program with an evening Executive MBA (EMBA) program. There are plans to revamp the BBA program (offering double majors, for example), too.
Administration
Institute of Business Administration, governed by the 4th Statute of the University of Dhaka, functions within the broad framework of policies, rules and regulations of the University. An 11-member Board of Governors provides the policy and administrative guidance for IBA. The Board of Governors is chaired by the Vice-Chancellor of University of Dhaka and it has the Director of IBA as its Member Secretary.
IBA director
The Director of IBA is the chief administrative authority for the institution. The current Director is Dr. Muhammad Ziaulhaq Mamun.
Former IBA directors
* Dr. Muzaffar Ahmed
* Dr. Mawdudur Rahman
* Dr M Alimullah Miyan
* Dr. Shamsul Haque
* Dr. Rahim B Talukder
* Dr. Abdur Rab
* Dr. Nurur Rahman
* Dr. Anwar Hossain
* Dr. Iftekhar Ghani Chowdhury

The campus
IBA has its own premises within the campus of the University of Dhaka. The four storied main building contains 65000 sqft of floor space. In addition to classrooms the premises houses a library, the administrative and faculty offices, conference room, lecture and seminar rooms, computer lab, machine room, a teacher's lounge, a cafeteria for students and an auditorium.
Academic programs
Currently BBA and MBA are the two major academic programs offered by IBA. The BBA Program is a 120 credit full-time program which includes 4 years of classroom teaching and a mandatry 10 week internship program. The MBA is a 60 credit academic program with a mandatory 12 week internship requirement. Students are allowed to take part in the MBA program in either fulltime or part-time basis.
In addition to BBA and MBA, IBA also awards MPhil degree of the University of Dhaka and offers a 3-year PhD program with course and thesis.
Admission
Since the Government of Bangladesh highly subsidizes the academic programs of IBA for the economically challenged students, there is always a stiff competition to get into this institution. Thousands of interested candidates seeking state subsidies apply for a few hundred seats in each academic program in each session. There are minimum requirements to get into the BBA and the MBA program of the institute. Applicants who meet those minimum requirements are asked to appear at a written test, which tests their linguistic, quantitative and analytical skills. Applicants who have a minimum score in GMAT may be exempted from this written test. A selected group of candidates are invited for the interview based on the results of the written test or GMAT score. The final selection is made based on a combination of candidate's interview score and their score from the written test/GMAT.
