Special features include a planetarium for use by all students in the Garland Independent School District. Lakeview Centennial High School is now a College and Career Magnet which began in 2001-2002 to students in grades 9-12. Students may apply for one or more of the unique programs - Dual Enrollment, Law and Criminal Justice, and Television Production and Broadcasting, and a Classical Center approach in Advanced Latin, piano, and dance. Students will participate in academic and real-world endeavors allowing them to grow in knowledge and critical thinking skills. Students who participate in these programs have unique opportunities to leave high school with a strong foundation and with the background needed to pursue their future college and career goals. The College and Career Magnet is a continuation of the tradition of excellence at Lakeview Centennial High School. ==Collegiate Academy== The LCHS College and Career Magnet Collegiate Academy works in conjunction with the Dallas Community College District to provide qualified applicants a unique academic experience. The program is designed to satisfy credit requirements for high school graduation while the student also earns an Associate of Science degree (63 hours) from DCCCD. Through this opportunity only offered at Lakeview Centennial High School, the Academy features a college curriculum in the structure of the high school environment, which allows students to continue to participate in extracurricular activities while they achieve dual diplomas. Advantages of enrolling in the Collegiate Academy: Earn high school and college credit at the same time for free. Avoid the cost of tuition and books. Accumulate college hours and earn an Associate of Science degree, 63 transferable hours to colleges for free. Prepare to get a head start on your earning power for free. Take college level classes from qualified instructors on LCHS campus for free. Collegiate Academy admissions criteria: Be an incoming freshman or a current freshman. Complete the admissions essay. Satisfy all State Accountabiltiy Tests performance standards. Score 70% or higher in both math and reading ITBS. Have and maintain at least a 3.0 GPA (current 9th graders) Two teacher recommendations Most recent report card Copy of high school transcripts (if applicable) ==Law and Criminal Justice== This program will provide an avenue for students to become involved in the community, gain direct experience in their field of interest, and develop a greater sense of the legal system (both criminal and civil). The Pre-Law Strand is for students who are interested in careers as lawyers, paralegals, legal secretaries, court reporters, bailiffs, court clerks and coordinators or other positions associated with a court. The course of study for the pre-law strand is: Crime in America / Technical Introduction to Criminal Justice Introduction to Law Business Law Courts and Criminal Procedure Mock Trial AP Government (focused on law) Law Internship (the opportunity to work for a local law firm) The Protective Services Strand is for students who are interested in careers in law enforcement (federal, state or local level), special services (such as the CIA), forensics (medical examiner, crime scene investigators) and corrections (correctional officer, probation officer, prison or jail warden). The course of study for the protective services strand is: Crime in America / Technical Introduction to Criminal Justice Correctional Systems & Practices Criminal Investigation Courts and Criminal Procedure Criminal Justice Internship (the opportunity to work for a law enforcement agency) The Law and Criminal Justice Program will provide an avenue for students to become involved in the community, gain direct experience in their field of interest, and develop a greater sense of the legal system (both criminal and civil). Students in these strands will participate in some or all of the following interscholastic competitions: Mock Trial Mock Legislature “We the People” (a simulated Senate Hearing on the Constitution for students in the AP Government class) Other avenues of “real world” activities include field trips (to courts, law firms and law schools, and to police stations) and speakers from different fields who will provide students with a first hand look at the career in which they are interested and will offer them the opportunity to explore their choice. Students will get a jumpstart on any career involving law, law enforcement, civil service or any other legal field. ==Television Production== The Television Production Magnet is housed in the same facility as GRS-TV, and is designed to be a hands-on working laboratory for the student. The facility has a fully equipped production studio, a quality control room where students work in a real-world studio environment. Students also work with a full range of field equipment, including field cameras, lighting and audio gear. Post-production facilities range from a basic editing classroom outfitted with Final Cut Express workstations, to full non-linear edit suites equipped with the latest version of Final Cut Pro Studio. Students in the Television Production Magnet will learn: The skills needed to write for the screen Studio and field production techniques Newsgathering and story development Post Production skills News anchor techniques In addition, a state-of-the-art editing lab has recently been added, in which students receive in-depth training in Final Cut Pro. This editing software is widely utilized in the television and film industries. Following the course, students have the opportunity to take the Apple Certification exam. Not only does the Television Production Magnet give students the opportunity to work with industry-standard equipment, but also the opportunity to be trained and mentored by faculty and staff who have vast experience in the production and broadcast industries. The goal of the Television Production Magnet is to teach students valuable technical skills, and to prepare them for college and employment in the television industry. ==AVID== This elective course provides college-bound students the additional training in writing, study skills, note-taking, and critical analysis which are needed to be successful in rigorous academic studies. AVID students are required to be enrolled in at least one Pre-AP, AP, or Dual Enrollment course. College visits, tutors, and assistance are also a part of the program. ==Future Teacher Internship== Students in this program will plan and direct individualized and group activities, prepare instructional materials, assist with record keeping, make physical arrangements, and complete other responsibilities of a classroom teacher. Students will be involved in observations and direct student instruction. Students will experience a full-range of education-related career roles, grade levels, subject areas, and ability groups. ==Business and Marketing== Business and Marketing Lakeview’s College of Business is designed to engage students with interests in business, marketing, and finance. The College of Business combines the strength of education with practical business experience and leadership opportunities. The goal of the School of Business is to empower the students to become competent, productive citizens in a diverse global marketplace, promoting and supporting academic excellence. Specialized course work will prepare students for career success immediately after they graduate high school. Incentives to this program are the number of certificates students can earn as they move through the program’s fields of study. Many of the graduates of the School of Business go on to earn college degrees, and that means an average lifetime earnings twice that of a high school graduate. There are four strands of study: Finance, Marketing, Information Technology and General Business. Students may select from the sequence of courses listed below which are recommended for grades 9-12. The CCM courses are unique to Lakeview Centennial High School. Dual Credit (DC) and Tech Prep courses are also available for some courses (see the Online Course Guide.) Students may elect to take the Virgil or Catullus Horace Exam or both for 6–18 hours of college credit. '''Dance''' Students may participate in beginning to intermediate ballet and jazz. Advanced dance includes modern dance and tap dance, and finally performance dance which requires an audition. Emphasis is placed on choreography, production, performance, and dance related careers. '''Piano Lab''' Students will be instructed in both group and individual settings. Piano technique and theory is available from the beginner level to advanced. No previous experience is required. '''Gymnastics''' Students will participate in competitive meets on either the Varsity or JV teams. Students meet off campus and transportation is provided. Gymnastics is offered from the beginner to advanced levels. ==Dual Credit== Dual credit may be viewed as a form of concurrent enrollment. It provides the opportunity for high school students to take college courses that count toward the high school graduation requirements. These courses may be taken at the high school or on a college campus during regular school hours. Classes are taught by a high school teacher with appropriate credentials or by a college faculty member.
