Initial plans were to commission the renowned American architect [[Louis Kahn]] to build the city as a Indian enterprise But the plans were canceled due to pressure to make a new Capital city as unique shine of Infrastructure in Gujarat as well as in India. So the charge of making the new city was given to Indian architects [[H. K. Mewada]] and [[Prakash M. Apte]]. The new city was constructed as per their plan and was named Gandhinagar on the Father of the Nation [[Mohandas karamchand Gandhi]], A mahatma himself. First stone of foundation was laid on 2nd August 1965. The capital of suburban gujarat was shifted in Gandhinagar in 1971. The new city is spread on the banks of the Sabarmati river.Now City is the greenest capital in whole Asia. The main city is designed on the west bank of the river on 42.9&nbsp;km² of land.
