Premise
Set in Miami, the series details the surprising and unforeseen events that take place in the life of Jane Villanueva, a hard-working, religious young Latina woman whose family tradition and a vow to save her virginity until her marriage to a detective is shattered when a doctor mistakenly artificially inseminates her during a checkup. And to make matters worse, the biological donor is a married man, a former playboy and cancer survivor who is not only the new owner of the hotel where Jane works, but was also her former teenage crush.
Cast
Main cast
* Gina Rodriguez as Jane Gloriana Villanueva, a 23-year-old religious young Latina woman who becomes pregnant after being artificially inseminated by mistake. After meeting Rafael and hearing his situation, she agrees to carry the baby full term and turn over custody to him and his wife Petra, but only if she is sure her baby will be safe and loved with them.
* Andrea Navedo as Xiomara "Xo" Villanueva, Jane's outgoing mother. She had Jane when she was 16 as a result of a one-night stand, which is why Jane would rather keep her virginity until marriage than make the mistake her mother did.
* Yael Grobglas as Petra (Natalia) Solano, Rafael's scheming wife and a member of a shady Czech crime family who got married to Rafael in order to steal his wealth, though over time she did fall in love with him. She is one of several antagonists in the series.
* Justin Baldoni as Rafael Solano, the hotel owner and the biological father of Jane's unborn child who has fallen out of love with his wife. As the series progresses, he develops growing feelings for Jane, and plans to divorce Petra after discovering her affair.
* Ivonne Coll as Alba Gloriana Villanueva, Jane's pious grandmother. She is highly religious, and encourages Jane to save herself for marriage. She never speaks English, although she does understand it, since Jane only speaks to her in English. She is also in the country illegally.
*Brett Dier as Michael Cordero, Jr., Jane's detective ex-fiancé. He is aware of Petra's affair, and blackmailed her to ensure that her marriage remains intact, so that Jane will give the baby to them. He also dislikes Rafael due to Jane's, and eventually Rafael's, mutual attraction.
* Jaime Camil as Rogelio de la Vega, famous telenovela star and Jane's biological father. The father currently is trying to gain a relationship with his daughter. He also has feelings for Xiomara. His ex-wife is after Xiomara and Jane, so she can take him back. Along with his two step daughters, they try to stop her.

|ShortSummary = Flashback: Jane's fiercely religious grandmother, Alba, makes her hold a white flower, then tells her to crumple it. After failing to restore the beauty of the flower, Alba tells the young Jane that her virginity is something that she could not restore or take back.
At the present, Jane, now 23 years old, working at a hotel to finance her studies and saving herself for marriage, finds her life turned upside down when she is artificially inseminated by accident. Jane is caught between her boyfriend Michael, who has no desire to raise another man's child, and Rafael, the owner of the sperm, whose battle with cancer means this is his only chance for a biological child. Petra, Rafael's wife, also wants the baby – but only to prolong her failing marriage while the pre-nuptial agreement is still in effect, where she would be able to acquire a huge amount of money. Petra is also found out to be having an affair with Rafael's best friend, named Roman Zazo. Meanwhile, Jane's mother, Xiomara, and grandmother have their own opinions about what Jane should do, influenced by Xiomara's unplanned pregnancy with Jane at a young age.

|ShortSummary = Xiomara meets her childhood idol Paulina Rubio when she attends an awards show with Rogelio who is expecting to win best actor in a telenovela. Meanwhile, Petra escalates her personal war against Rafael to get her hands on more of his money while her captive/blackmailer, Ivan, plots a way to escape hers and Magda's room. Petra's background story is revealed as well as how her mother, Magda, was disfigured and the reasons why she fled from the Czech Republic six years earlier. Also, Michael begins to suspect that Rafael is or may know the shadowy criminal referred to as Sin Rostro, and he has his troublesome brother investigate. Just when Michael finds evidence in an office safe revealing false passports and cash, the evidence again disappears. Jane thinks back to when she used to write short stories about herself and when she receives notice that one, which she wrote about Xiomara's lurid past, is going to be published, she is worried about telling her mother about it. When Jane and Rafael make a background check on Petra and learn that her name and past references are false, they confront her and force her to drop her lawsuit. At then end, when a drunk Alba stumbles upon the captive Ivan, Petra's mother (who is revealed not to be crippled) attempts to murder her by pushing her down a flight of fire escape stairs.

Jane the Virgin is an American serial dramedy television series that debuted on The CW on October 13, 2014. It is a loose adaptation of the Venezuelan telenovela Juana la Virgen created by Perla Farías.
Recurring cast
* Anthony Mendez (voice over) as the Latin Lover Narrator; Third-person omniscient.
* Yara Martinez as Dr. Luisa Alver, Rafael's recovering alcoholic sister, and the doctor who accidentally artificially inseminated Jane.
* Michael Rady as Lachlan, Rafael's rival and Petra's former fiancé.

* Alano Miller as Roman Zazo, Rafael's late best friend and Petra's lover. He is murdered in the hotel, causing tension for everyone, including Petra and Rafael.
