Raja Dasgupta, father of Ribhu, was a filmmaker. Bengali film-maker [[Birsa Dasgupta]] is his brother in relation. Towards the end of 2004 he went to Mumbai from Kolkata and stayed with her brother Birsa. In Mumbai he worked as as an assistant to filmmaker [[Anurag KAsyap]]. His first film as an assistant film director was ''1971''.
