The appear to be no comprehensive references to the history of Nothing or its vicinity, and it has been claimed that locals told travelers it "got named by a bunch of drunks."<ref>{{cite book | last = Peterson | first = Dale | title = Storyville, Usa | publisher = University of Georgia Press | location = Athens | year = 2001 | isbn = 0-8203-2303-9 | page = 238 }}</ref>
However the area around Nothing does have a history to be researched and by some accounts it will be a prospecting history going back to early 1900s or latest 1800s. It is said that people living can 'always' remember a garage being there, and in times of less competent cars the place was a savior to those in difficulty of fears of running out of petrol. Nothing was once also a ROCK SHOP, supposedly selling interesting stones found in the district that included agate and Apaches' tears (obsidian). A belt attractive to prospectors runs from Nothing northeast to Bagdad. Nothing has frequently been noted on lists of [[Place names considered unusual|unusual place names]].<ref>{{cite book | url=https://books.google.com/books?id=29zh3dIgmv8C&lpg=PP1&pg=PR11#v=onepage&q&f=false| title=Welcome to Horneytown, North Carolina, Population: 15: An insider's guide to 201 of the world's weirdest and wildest places | publisher=Adams Media | author=Parker, Quentin | year=2010 | pages=xi}}</ref><ref>{{cite book|last=Thompson|first=George E.|title=You Live Where?: Interesting and Unusual Facts about where We Live|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=0Ia7Rga26OkC&pg=PA5|date=1 July 2009|publisher=iUniverse|isbn=978-1-4401-3421-0|page=5}}</ref>
