Construction for the airport started on June 25, 1986, and the first flight departed on August 29, 1989. The current [[airport terminal|terminal]] covers an area of 33,000 square meters. During 2008, it handled 8.46 million passengers, becoming the 14th busiest airport in mainland China in passenger traffic terms. 5.11 million passengers took their flights in the first half of 2009. During Summer 2009, The airport is experiencing even faster growth: 1.02 million and 1.12 million passengers used the airport in July and August respectively. Especially in August, the number of passengers increased by 60.5%. And 10,552 movements were operated, which increased by 51.7%.

The total number of passengers of the whole year 2009 is expected to reach 11 million.


The existing runway had been extended from 2,600m to 3,200m in April 2009, allowing all commercial aircrafts except A380 to land and take off.

A plan for RMB ¥2.15-billion (~USD $270 million) expansion has been approved and work has begun in July 2006 to:
* Extend the [[runway]] from the current 2,600m to 3,200m (completed);
* Add additional [[taxiway]]s and [[Airport ramp|ramps]];
* Renovate the old terminal;
* Build a new terminal with a total area of 163,000 square meters; and
* Expand the airport parking space.
