Maher (Hindu) people of Saurashtra region of Gujrat state in India are settled in area called Barda and Ghed (Sorath) where they can be found in large numbers. Maher are also known as Mers in local Gujarati language. Before 1950 most of the Mahers were engaged in agriculture and engaged in activities of dairy farming along with their main agriculture farm work. Historically being a Kshatriya caste (Warriors) they have served in military of their local kings, notable examples of Jethwa kingdom of Porbandar and various kingdoms of Mewad (Merwada or Merwad) in Rajasthan.
