</p><p>Burley is the principal city of the Burley, Idaho <a href="/enwiki/wiki/Burley_micropolitan_area" class="mw-redirect" title="Burley micropolitan area">Micropolitan Statistical Area</a>, which includes Cassia and Minidoka counties. Burley is the third-largest city in Idaho's <a href="/enwiki/wiki/Magic_Valley" title="Magic Valley">Magic Valley</a> region after <a href="/enwiki/wiki/Twin_Falls,_Idaho" title="Twin Falls, Idaho">Twin Falls</a> and <a href="/enwiki/wiki/Jerome,_Idaho" title="Jerome, Idaho">Jerome</a>. <p>A post office called Burley has been in operation since 1905.<sup id="cite_ref-5" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-5">[5]</a></sup> The community was named after David Ellsworth Burley, a railroad official.<sup id="cite_ref-6" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-6">[6]</a></sup>

<p>Most of the city lies in Cassia County, with only a small portion extending into Minidoka County.
</p><p>According to the <a href="/enwiki/wiki/United_States_Census_Bureau" title="United States Census Bureau">United States Census Bureau</a>, the city has a total area of 6.44 square miles (16.68 km<sup>2</sup>), of which 6.12 square miles (15.85 km<sup>2</sup>) is land and 0.32 square miles (0.83 km<sup>2</sup>) is water.<sup id="cite_ref-Gazetteer_files_7-0" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-Gazetteer_files-7">[7]</a></sup>

<p>Burley experiences a <a href="/enwiki/wiki/Semi-arid_climate" title="Semi-arid climate">semi-arid climate</a> (<a href="/enwiki/wiki/K%C3%B6ppen_climate_classification" title="Köppen climate classification">Köppen</a> <i>BSk</i>) with cold winters and hot, dry summers. Burley is also host to incredibly high wind speeds. In 2008 a group of local farmers sued the Idaho BLM because pesticides that the Burley BLM office sprayed on their lands were carried by a wind storm onto farmers lands, effectively destroying crops.
