Lopez Tonight is an American late-night television talk show hosted by comedian George Lopez. The hour-long program premiered on November 9, 2009, on cable network TBS. Lopez is the first Mexican-American to host a late-night talk show on an English-language network in the United States. The show features audience interaction using a high energy format. The program airs Monday through Thursday at 11:00pm Eastern and Pacific in the United States as well as on TLN in Canada.
History
The show debuted on November 9, 2009 with guests Kobe Bryant, Eva Longoria Parker, as well as a special appearance from Ellen DeGeneres and a musical performance from Carlos Santana. On January 18, 2010 Jennifer Lopez appeared to do the opening monologue stating "Welcome to Lopez Tonight, where nobody gets fired", addressing the 2010 Tonight Show conflict. She jokingly announced herself as host of the show having the same surname as the host.
In an ironic twist, one of the players in that Tonight Show conflict, Conan O'Brien, will push Lopez Tonight to midnight ET/PT when his new show debuts on TBS in November 2010. O'Brien famously quit his position as Tonight host after NBC had requested to move it to 12:05 a.m. and put his predecessor, Jay Leno, back in the 11:35 p.m. slot he occupied for 17 years. However, the situation at TBS is different in that Conan had initially refused to do the same to Lopez, but agreed to it only after receiving Lopez's approval. George Lopez campaigned by promoting "I’m Team Coco ... and Now I’m Team Loco".
Format
Like many traditional talk shows, Lopez Tonight follows a typical six-piece format. After the announcer announces the opening credits for the show, the first segment is a monologue by Lopez, with quick one-liners about current events and brief comedy sketches occasionally mixed in. The second segment is a full comedy sketch.
As the nightly broadcast approaches midnight, the first guest appears. The interview is divided into two segments, then followed by the fifth segment, which is the interview of the second guest. The sixth and final segment is almost always a musical performance, but occasionally, a stand-up comedian will perform instead.
Immediately following the last performance segment, Lopez walks on camera to thank the performers, and bids farewell to the audience.
Recurring segments
Lopez's primary sketches are a street interview segment similar to the popular sketch Jaywalking on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno named Bullet Wound or Not A Bullet Wound which typically involves different ethnic groups asked primary racial questions. Another primary sketch named Creepy Little White Girl where a small girl rises from the audience to deliver bad news to George.
Notable episodes
In February 2010, according to Fox News and Big Hollywood, Lopez referred to Sarah Palin as "La Cabrona" (Bitch), and said, "Sarah Palin said that it is wrong for President Obama's advisor Rahm Emanuel to use the word "retarded", but it's alright for Rush Limbaugh.
