lockdown Economy is a global non-profit grassroots socio-economic and educational initiative with the objective to help micro- and small businesses and self-employed professionals to overcome the COVID-19 pandemic and reactivate the economy . It is organized by the Think Tank AlterContacts . The United Nations has recognized it as an Acceleration Action for the Sustainable Development Goals.
----
About the initiative
----
The Lockdown Economy facilitates social dialogue among entrepreneurs to face the pandemic together. It consists of 1) the unique-format live interviews with micro- and small- business owners and self-employed professionals worldwide in English and local languages and 2) the Academy which provides real-time education materials about entrepreneurshipThe Lockdown Economy facilitates social dialogue among entrepreneurs to face the pandemic together. Potentially involving UN agencies, intergovernmental organizations, corporations, and investors. The Lockdown Economy helps
discover and bring the attention to the specific needs of micro- and small- businesses .
• Interviews
----
The interviews cover questions such as the nature and history of the business; the state of business before, during and after lockdown; key challenges brought about by the quarantine
and social distancing; what did the business owner try to overcome them; what lessons did she or he take out from this experience; what is the way forward .
It gives entrepreneurs a forum to share their struggles, successes, and experiences of dealing with the pandemic . It enables the exchange of knowledge, best practices and examples of
immediate response to the crisis, adapting to the ‘new normal’, lessons learned, and business
models that foster resilience, inclusiveness and sustainability and that ride the digital wave.
It is a real source of inspiration for MSEs no matter what stage of business they are in. They
learn from examples from around the world of what can be done. The European Commission report on MSMEs
* Connection to entrepreneurs and students

•Academy
----
The second part of the initiative is the Academy. The Lockdown Economy gives us unique
educational materials and access to concrete cases which could be used along with Harvard, KPMG, McKinsey and other business cases. By integrating lessons from multiple countries on
several continents, we provide a comprehensive overview of how one can proceed in
entrepreneurship in the new world .
Across the globe, young people are being disproportionately affected, particularly in the world of work. None of the courses they had, prepared them for this crisis. The European Commission report on Youth employment emphasizes that they require additional support adjusting to
the world of work that has been changing, <q>with an increasing prevalence of non-standard forms of work, increasingly precarious school-to-work transitions and more frequent job-to-job transitions.</q> According to the European Commission, one of the educational domains that deserve special emphasis is entrepreneurial skills allowing young people to profit from the perspectives connected to self-employment . For students participating in the Academy it is an opportunity to be exposed to multicultural business mindsets and languages; to see the best practices of design thinking, agile and business development in action. It allows them to take a leading role in creating an innovative solution to meet the needs of society during these unprecedented times.
For entrepreneurs involved in the Academy, it is an opportunity to address a complex challenge of their business and involve a group of students in solving it; a chance to have an outside look at their business model and how the operations are run. Often sole entrepreneurs simply do not
have the capacity to take care of everything so this collaboration will provide them with extra pairs of hands and minds to address it.
Joined by our partner universities the Lockdown Economy team is designing educational programs that are based on real case studies from the lockdown. Once ready, they will be published as online courses on the leading learning platform where millions of students worldwide will get access to them. These materials to be distributed across various geographies, different levels of education and age groups. The next horizon for the initiative is to create and develop learning and training materials based on the Lockdown Economy to prepare entrepreneurs and students to pandemic and post-pandemic changes and enable building the new green, digital and sustainable economy. It will be done <q>by entrepreneurs for entrepreneurs</q> in micro-modules that they can cover in a couple of hours depending on what problem they have.
Pilots of the Academy
----
Together with the Anahuac Mayab University in Mexico, in August 2020 we hosted the pilot oF Academy. Five small-business owners featured in the Lockdown Economy interviews were paired up with five teams of students to address the real business problems of the
COVID-19. During three weeks, students worked together with experts to design a new approach and how to implement it. They had multiple conversations to do a reality check and align. It went as far as students actually having to test the ideas they were proposing with the
local government and universities . Here is a documentary about it https://youtu.be/rdST2KOalAA. Together with the Epoka University in Albania, in November 2020 we started the Operations
Management Course for 150 Bachelor Students of the 3d year, based on the information provided in the Lockdown Economy. By February 2021 they conducted 11 interviews with small businesses in Albania and prepared the analysis of their operations.
----
Coordination Mechanisms and Funding
----
The initiative is organized and coordinated by the GlobalThink Tank for Sustainable Development AlterContacts and its co-founders Julia Skupchenko and Massimo Mercuri.
The think tank plays the role of integrator, connecting entrepreneurs and facilitating the social
innovation involving partners from various industries, sectors and countries. It has a wide
network of experts and connections in the entrepreneurial and academic world. It is based in the
European Union that has a mandate of supporting small business in Europe and the World; one
of the best countries for modern entrepreneurship, the Netherlands ; and one of the most
well-known startup ecosystems, Amsterdam.
The Think Tank AlterContacts is responsible for coordinating volunteers , producing the
series, including inviting guests, filming, post-production, promotion and transforming interviews
into business cases for schools. This initiative is driven forward through partnerships with
universities, research institutes, NGOs, and other organizations .
To date (October 27, 2020) , the initiative is “bootstrapped” . All the work is done by volunteers. The
beneficiaries -- entrepreneurs and students -- are not charged for the visibility and the
knowledge.

Entrepreneurs are one of the biggest groups impacted by the pandemic The introduction of quarantine requirements affected the employment of workers in the service

0.pdf|url-status=live}}</ref>. Moreover, according to the EU Spring 2020 Economic Forecast, the self-employed tend to receive less support from government schemes and are overrepresented in the sectors hardest-hit by the confinement . With more than two-thirds of the global population employed by formal and informal Micro-,Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs), they make up over 90% of all firms and account, on average, for 70% of total employment and 50% of GDP . The pandemic has led
to significant loss in revenues for most small businesses and putting them on the verge of survival . Over 67% of micro and small firms reported that the crisis strongly affected their business operations .
SMEs, self-employed, entrepreneurs are deeply woven into the economic and social fabric of the World. So the survival of this layer of the population is vital and primordial to maintain social stability. The United Nations report on SDG states <q>the COVID-19 pandemic is a vivid reminder of the need for global cooperation and solidarity. We must strengthen and combine our efforts to leave no one behind and to forge the transformative pathways needed to create a more livable
world.</q> One of the key things missing in enabling entrepreneurs in overcoming the crisis of pandemic is access to real-time information , by contributing to Goal 4: Quality Education, Goal 5: Gender Equality, Goal 8: EconomicGrowth, Goal 9: Social Innovation, Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities, Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals . The United Nations has
recognized and published the Lockdown Economy as an Acceleration Action towards Sustainable Development Goals .
•Impact on SDG 8 Economic Growth
----
The initiative is dedicated to inclusive and sustainable economic growth: to supporting micro-, small- business owners and self-employed professionals, which comprise over half of the productive population of the Earth , in surviving the pandemic. By enabling the peer-to-peer exchange of the experiences, best practices for and lessons learned due to COVID-19 impacts, it increases their capacity to adapt, improve their flexibility, resiliency and responsiveness. It contributes to economic equality by featuring a diverse group of guests by gender, geography, nationality, the type of business and prior education. The initiative helps to diffuse innovation . It grows their competence in using digital technology to increase their visibility and reach their customers. The initiative gives insights into new market opportunities locally and internationally. It fosters new partnerships needed to weather the hardships of the pandemic even in the cultures where entrepreneurs see each other as rivals By running joint educational programs based on the Lockdown Economy, it helps universities to prepare business students for the new economy.
•Impact on SDG 5 Gender Equality
----
Gender equality is a fundamental human rights principle and a central, standalone goal in the
2030 Agenda. Women are especially at risk of losing their livelihoods during the pandemic-induced economic crisis . According to the report by the OECD, “the COVID-19 pandemic has affected female business leaders differently from male business leaders. Women were more likely to operate micro-businesses and were concentrated in sectors that have been particularly impacted by lockdown measures.” 64% of women-led firms declared their
business operations were strongly affected by the crisis . It means that women-led firms are
more sensitive to crises and have fewer support options. The Lockdown Economy supports women’s entrepreneurship and gives special attention to the businesses initiated by women. It ensures a reinforced role of women as actors of change, advances their economic empowerment and provides female entrepreneurs with access to markets and support services . It raises the profile and increases opportunities for women
entrepreneurship. Additionally, the Lockdown Economy has a strong representation of women in the coordinating team, providing opportunities for self-development, growth and support in these
challenging times.
•Impact on Community
----
The Lockdown Economy uplifts, inspires and unites entrepreneurs all over the world in facing the pandemic together. It raises public awareness to their challenges and shows them simple ways of helping . It inspires entrepreneurial thinking, power of belief in your potential and
bold action. It empowers the next generation of entrepreneurs and business leaders. The think tank AlterContacts through the initiative develops the communities it reaches. It
involves current students in helping business owners address real challenges. Besides providing the interview guests and volunteers with a global source of personal connections, it is training each participating volunteer in communication skills, building or improving their professional online image, and use of digital technology for virtual collaboration. By giving examples of how micro-, small- business owners and self-employed professionals
respond to the COVID-19 pandemic in a sustainable, inclusive, green and resilient way, it is
contributing to Building Back Better society .
•Impact on Self-employed Professionals and Small Business Owners
----
The Lockdown Economy interviews make the entrepreneurs feel that they are not alone but apart of a community where every business is facing similar challenges. Even if they cannot get
together in groups, it enables the virtual peer-to-peer exchange of experiences, best practices and lessons learned from COVID-19. The interviews fill the void that always existed but became especially evident during the pandemic -- connecting with and learning from fellow entrepreneurs. This knowledge increases the entrepreneurs’ capacity to adapt, improve their flexibility, resiliency and responsiveness. Featuring a diverse group of guests by gender,
geography, nationality, business/service sector and prior education make it useful to a wider
audience. The businesses that are featured in the interviews get a voice and forum to speak, to share their
thoughts, apprehensions and learning. We focus on the true stories of real entrepreneurs. The format of an open conversation where they can share their ups and downs creates a rapport
with the audience. That increases their visibility and chances to survive as a business in these uncertain times.
•Impact on people who are not personally involved in self-employment or who do not run their own businesses
----
Due to a lack of information, they cannot imagine the hardships entrepreneurs are facing now.
They are unaware of the challenges of individual <q>down-to-earth</q> entrepreneurs and their ingenuity. These stories show that everyone can make a difference, either in formal or informal economies. We want to transform society from <q>sellers</q> and <q>consumers</q> into a community. To build a post-pandemic world based on cooperation and compassion.
•Impact on Environment
----
All the activities for the initiative are done digitally and remotely which minimizes the carbon footprint of all participants, compared to if it was done in person. The interviews showcase and promote sustainable businesses that are environmentally-friendly. For example, a sustainable fashion brand with non-cruel silk production in India , a coffee-caterer using plant-based milk only , a webshop distributing coffee from small cooperative farms in nature protected zones of Mexico , a cruelty-free plant-based sushi restaurant . It features a number of businesses from the tourism industry that came up with innovative solutions on how to continue their operations safely during the pandemic. For example, a mother-daughter travel business that is doing virtual expeditions (through collaboration with
local counterparts) for its many followers . <q>MSMEs are reaching many sustainable development goals without even realizing it. Yet, they
can be empowered to do more.</q> The Lockdown Economy initiative raises awareness of various possibilities micro- and small- businesses can pursue to protect our environment.

In half of them they are hosted by the local volunteer-interviewers . That accounts for the local conditions of entrepreneurship in different parts of the world. From global it becomes a community-driven

+=== •Academy ===
+----
+The second part of the initiative is the Academy. The Lockdown Economy gives us unique
+educational materials and access to concrete cases which could be used along with Harvard, KPMG, McKinsey and other business cases. By integrating lessons from multiple countries on
+several continents, we provide a comprehensive overview of how one can proceed in
+entrepreneurship in the new world .
+Across the globe, young people are being disproportionately affected, particularly in the world of work. None of the courses they had, prepared them for this crisis. The European Commission report on Youth employment emphasizes that they require additional support adjusting to
+the world of work that has been changing, <q>with an increasing prevalence of non-standard forms of work, increasingly precarious school-to-work transitions and more frequent job-to-job transitions.</q> According to the European Commission, one of the educational domains that deserve special emphasis is entrepreneurial skills allowing young people to profit from the perspectives connected to self-employment . For students participating in the Academy it is an opportunity to be exposed to multicultural business mindsets and languages; to see the best practices of design thinking, agile and business development in action. It allows them to take a leading role in creating an innovative solution to meet the needs of society during these unprecedented times.
+For entrepreneurs involved in the Academy, it is an opportunity to address a complex challenge of their business and involve a group of students in solving it; a chance to have an outside look at their business model and how the operations are run. Often sole entrepreneurs simply do not
+have the capacity to take care of everything so this collaboration will provide them with extra pairs of hands and minds to address it.
+Joined by our partner universities the Lockdown Economy team is designing educational programs that are based on real case studies from the lockdown.
+
+===== Pilots of the Academy =====
+----
+Together with the Anahuac Mayab University in Mexico, in August 2020 we hosted the pilot oF Academy. Five small-business owners featured in the Lockdown Economy interviews were paired up with five teams of students to address the real business problems of the
+COVID-19. During three weeks, students worked together with experts to design a new approach and how to implement it. They had multiple conversations to do a reality check and align. It went as far as students actually having to test the ideas they were proposing with the
+local government and universities . Here is a documentary about it https://youtu.be/rdST2KOalAA. Together with the Epoka University in Albania, in November 2020 we started the Operations
+Management Course for 150 Bachelor Students of the 3d year, based on the information provided in the Lockdown Economy. By February 2021 they conducted 11 interviews with small businesses in Albania and prepared the analysis of their operations.

+== Coordination Mechanisms and Funding ==
+----
+
+The initiative is organized and coordinated by the GlobalThink Tank for Sustainable Development AlterContacts and its co-founders Julia Skupchenko and Massimo Mercuri.
+The think tank plays the role of integrator, connecting entrepreneurs and facilitating the social
+innovation involving partners from various industries, sectors and countries. It has a wide
+network of experts and connections in the entrepreneurial and academic world. It is based in the
+European Union that has a mandate of supporting small business in Europe and the World; one
+of the best countries for modern entrepreneurship, the Netherlands The introduction of quarantine requirements affected the employment of workers in the service

+to significant loss in revenues for most small businesses and putting them on the verge of survival . Over 67% of micro and small firms reported that the crisis strongly affected their business operations .
+SMEs, self-employed, entrepreneurs are deeply woven into the economic and social fabric of the World.

+As a society, we made it a norm to only share success stories publicly. Nobody wants to come out and openly admit that the business is suffering, the sales are low and the uncertainty of the future is daunting. But <q>we need to act as a global community in order to come out of the crisis stronger, more resilient and sustainable. +== Social Impact ==

+
+The Lockdown Economy initiative fulfils the United Nations recent call to increase efforts towards achieving Sustainable Development Goals , by contributing to Goal 4: Quality Education, Goal 5: Gender Equality, Goal 8: EconomicGrowth, Goal 9: Social Innovation, Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities, Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals . The United Nations has
+recognized and published the Lockdown Economy as an Acceleration Action towards Sustainable Development Goals .
+
+=== •Impact on SDG 8 Economic Growth ===
+----
+The initiative is dedicated to inclusive and sustainable economic growth: to supporting micro-, small- business owners and self-employed professionals, which comprise over half of the productive population of the Earth , in surviving the pandemic.
+
+=== •Impact on SDG 5 Gender Equality ===
+----
+Gender equality is a fundamental human rights principle and a central, standalone goal in the
+2030 Agenda. Women are especially at risk of losing their livelihoods during the pandemic-induced economic crisis . According to the report by the OECD, “the COVID-19 pandemic has affected female business leaders differently from male business leaders. Women were more likely to operate micro-businesses and were concentrated in sectors that have been particularly impacted by lockdown measures.” 64% of women-led firms declared their
+business operations were strongly affected by the crisis . It means that women-led firms are
+more sensitive to crises and have fewer support options.
+entrepreneurship. Additionally, the Lockdown Economy has a strong representation of women in the coordinating team, providing opportunities for self-development, growth and support in these
+challenging times.
+
+=== •Impact on Community ===
+----
+The Lockdown Economy uplifts, inspires and unites entrepreneurs all over the world in facing the pandemic together. It raises public awareness to their challenges and shows them simple ways of helping . It inspires entrepreneurial thinking, power of belief in your potential and
+bold action. It empowers the next generation of entrepreneurs and business leaders. The think tank AlterContacts through the initiative develops the communities it reaches. It
+involves current students in helping business owners address real challenges. Besides providing the interview guests and volunteers with a global source of personal connections, it is training each participating volunteer in communication skills, building or improving their professional online image, and use of digital technology for virtual collaboration. By giving examples of how micro-, small- business owners and self-employed professionals
+respond to the COVID-19 pandemic in a sustainable, inclusive, green and resilient way, it is
+contributing to Building Back Better society .
+
+=== •Impact on Self-employed Professionals and Small Business Owners ===
+----
+The Lockdown Economy interviews make the entrepreneurs feel that they are not alone but apart of a community where every business is facing similar challenges. Even if they cannot get
+together in groups, it enables the virtual peer-to-peer exchange of experiences, best practices and lessons learned from COVID-19. The interviews fill the void that always existed but became especially evident during the pandemic -- connecting with and learning from fellow entrepreneurs. This knowledge increases the entrepreneurs’ capacity to adapt, improve their flexibility, resiliency and responsiveness. Featuring a diverse group of guests by gender,
+geography, nationality, business/service sector and prior education make it useful to a wider
+audience. The businesses that are featured in the interviews get a voice and forum to speak, to share their
+thoughts, apprehensions and learning. We focus on the true stories of real entrepreneurs. The format of an open conversation where they can share their ups and downs creates a rapport
+with the audience. That increases their visibility and chances to survive as a business in these uncertain times.
+
+=== •Impact on people who are not personally involved in self-employment or who do not run their own businesses ===
+----
+Due to a lack of information, they cannot imagine the hardships entrepreneurs are facing now.
+They are unaware of the challenges of individual <q>down-to-earth</q> entrepreneurs and their ingenuity. These stories show that everyone can make a difference, either in formal or informal economies. We want to transform society from <q>sellers</q> and <q>consumers</q> into a community. To build a post-pandemic world based on cooperation and compassion.
+
+=== •Impact on Environment ===
+----
+All the activities for the initiative are done digitally and remotely which minimizes the carbon footprint of all participants, compared to if it was done in person. For example, a mother-daughter travel business that is doing virtual expeditions (through collaboration with
+local counterparts) for its many followers . <q>MSMEs are reaching many sustainable development goals without even realizing it. Yet, they
+can be empowered to do more.</q> The Lockdown Economy initiative raises awareness of various possibilities micro- and small- businesses can pursue to protect our environment.
