Burley is the third-largest city in Idaho's Magic Valley region after Twin Falls and Jerome. Along with nearby Rupert it forms the bulk of the "Mini-Cassia" area of southern Idaho. ==History== A post office called Burley has been in operation since 1905. The community was named after David Ellsworth Burley, a railroad official. ==Geography== Most of the city lies in Cassia County, with only a small portion extending into Minidoka County. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 6.44 sqmi, of which 6.12 sqmi is land and 0.32 sqmi is water. ===Climate=== Burley experiences a semi-arid climate (Köppen BSk) with cold winters and hot, dry summers. Burley is also host to incredibly high wind speeds. In 2008 a group of local farmers sued the Idaho BLM because pesticides that the Burley BLM office sprayed on their lands were carried by a wind storm onto farmers lands, effectively destroying crops. {{Weather box |width=auto |location = Burley Municipal Airport |single line = Y |Jan record high F = 62 |Feb record high F = 74 |Mar record high F = 78 |Apr record high F = 89 |May record high F = 97 |Jun record high F = 102 |Jul record high F = 104 |Aug record high F = 105 |Sep record high F = 97 |Oct record high F = 91 |Nov record high F = 79 |Dec record high F = 65 |year record high F =105 |Jan high F = 36.9 |Feb high F = 43.9 |Mar high F = 52.8 |Apr high F = 61.8 |May high F = 70.5 |Jun high F = 80.6 |Jul high F = 88.6 |Aug high F = 87.8 |Sep high F = 77.0 |Oct high F = 64.5 |Nov high F = 47.7 |Dec high F = 38.0 |year high F =62.5 |Jan low F = 19.7 |Feb low F = 24.2 |Mar low F = 30.1 |Apr low F = 35.8 |May low F = 43.2 |Jun low F = 50.0 |Jul low F = 55.2 |Aug low F = 53.5 |Sep low F = 45.0 |Oct low F = 36.0 |Nov low F = 27.1 |Dec low F = 19.9 |year low F =36.6 |Jan record low F = −30 |Feb record low F = −26 |Mar record low F = −3 |Apr record low F = 12 |May record low F = 19 |Jun record low F = 29 |Jul record low F = 33 |Aug record low F = 31 |Sep record low F = 18 |Oct record low F = 9 |Nov record low F = −14 |Dec record low F = −23 |year record low F= −30 |precipitation colour = green |Jan precipitation inch = 1.18 |Feb precipitation inch = 0.83 |Mar precipitation inch = 1.08 |Apr precipitation inch = 0.97 |May precipitation inch = 1.28 |Jun precipitation inch = 0.87 |Jul precipitation inch = 0.35 |Aug precipitation inch = 0.41 |Sep precipitation inch = 0.64 |Oct precipitation inch = 0.67 |Nov precipitation inch = 1.00 |Dec precipitation inch = 1.01 |source 1= NOAA (normals, 1971–2000) |source 2= The Weather Channel (Records) |date=March 2011}} ==Demographics== ===2010 census=== As of the census of 2010, there were 10,345 people, 3,644 households, and 2,499 families living in the city.
