It was founded on December 1, 1975, at [[Kean University|Kean University formerly known as Kean College]] in [[Union Township, Union County, New Jersey|Union, New Jersey]]. It emphasizes Latin unity and the celebration of the Latin culture. Lambda Theta Phi was born to promote the spirit of brotherhood, to protect the rights of Latino students in their quest for an education, to promote the rich Latino culture, and to maximize leadership potentials to provide guidance to our community. In 1992, Lambda Theta Phi was accepted into the North American Interfraternity Conference (NIC). Lambda Theta Phi firmly supports a non-hazing approach to membership induction.  The Fraternity actively works to educate its members about hazing, its effects, how to identify it, and how to speak out if necessary.  Lambda Theta Phi makes use of resources from hazingprevention.org. '''BE IT RESOLVED THAT''' Lambda Theta Phi Latin Fraternity, Inc. fully endorses the “Resolution Against Hazing” as developed by the North-American Interfraternity Conference, Inc '''FURTHER''', that all member chapters endorse this resolution, found below, with full accountability for its provisions, and that of all current pledging guidelines: “'''BE IT RESOLVED THAT''' the North-American Interfraternity Conference hereby unequivocally repeats its historic repudiation of any pre-initiation or initiation practices antithetical to the laws and underlying principles for which each member fraternity stands; '''FURTHER''', that this body expects each fraternity to take appropriate action to implement the intent of this resolution; '''FURTHER''', that the Conference not only records its continuing disapproval of hazing in the strongest possible terms, but declares its intention to monitor closely the incidents of this activity through the establishment of a special ad hoc committee for such purpose, and '''FURTHER''', that all member fraternities endorse this resolution.” Any brother who engages in hazing a prospective (or continuing) brother does not represent Lambda Theta Phi nor its ideals. Brothers involved in hazing will be subject to disciplinary action by the Fraternity.
