The name Calinan was coined from the Bagobo word "Colina" which means water that changes direction. Calinan have rich and fertile soil that attracted investors to put up business on its unique and interesting places. To mention few were DAVCO, DOLE, and DFC. The fast growing population of the place encouraged the pioneered teacher Paulina Naval to educate the children of Calinan. Calinan was once part of the Guianga District during World War II liberation. It was the time when Davao City composes only of two District; Guianga and Davao Central District. Guianga District was under the supervision ship of Mrs. Victoria Montgomery. She manned Matina, Talomo, Toril, Dacudao and Calinan. Early 1950's, Calinan was created into a separate District and part of it were Roxas, Marilog, and Baguio.
