Her début feature-length documentary film Partners of the Heart was inspired by Katie McCabe's Washingtonian article "Like Something the Lord Made". "Partners of the Heart" is the story of the 34-year partnership between Dr. Alfred Blalock, a white surgeon, and Vivien Thomas, a black lab technician. At the height of segregation, Blalock and Thomas pioneered a heart surgery that saved the lives of thousands of children, called blue babies. Invented by the Blalock-Thomas-Taussig, team at Johns Hopkins, the (Blalock-Taussig shunt) was the first surgical procedure of a congenital heart defect called Blue Baby Syndrome or Tetralogy of Fallot. Some members of the medical profession are now referring to the procedure as the Blalock-Thomas-Taussig shunt. The invention of the Blalock-Thomas-Taussig shunt and its first use on a 15th month old baby named Eileen Saxon on November 29, 1944 began modern heart surgery. An African-American laboratory technician with no more than a high school education, Thomas, working under and with Blalock, replicated the heat defect on laboratory dogs and then experimented on dogs to develop the Blalock Thomas-Taussig shunt procedure to correct the defect. Thomas and Blalock together went on to train the first generation of heart surgeons, including Denton Cooley.
Although the film received numerous positive reviews, not every critic was positive.

Along with the McCabe's Washingtonian article, "Something The Lord Made", Kalin's film Partners of the Heart inspired the making of the HBO feature film "Something the Lord Made". "Something the Lord Made" was the feature film version of the Partners of the Heart story.

Partners of the Heart also received many positive critic reviews including a 2002 review by Kevin Thomas of the Los Angeles Times entitled "Tale of an Unknown Hero". Thomas wrote: <br />
:::::"Andrea Kalin's "Partners of the Heart," which premieres tonight at 6:30 at the Simon Wiesenthal Museum of Tolerance in
:::::L.A., explores an extraordinary professional relationship between cardiac surgical pioneers Albert Blalock and Vivien Thomas
:::::that cuts to the paradoxes, absurdities, cruelties and injustices of segregated America....At the same time, Kalin's film
:::::celebrates the resilience of the human spirit in a profoundly moving fashion, and shows what a resolute individual can accomplish within
:::::rigid social constraints."The result is an eloquent, well-researched work narrated by Morgan Freeman. It features many notable
:::::interviewees and a smooth blending of archival materials with understated, re-created sequences....:::::

Andrea Kalin used the film to catalyze an outreach campaign. One of the outreach program initiatives was educational discussion groups for middle school and high school students. In Spring 2002, The Annie E. Casey Foundation sponsored a gathering of over two hundred science minded students from Baltimore to the campus of Johns Hopkins Medical Center to hear Dr. Levi Watkins, a legendary African American surgeon. Dr. Levi Watkins challenged the young teens with the "Partners of the Heart" story of Vivian Thomas and Alfred Blalock and Watkins own personal journey as a heart surgeon and civil rights activist. Other out reach initiatives included health fairs, nationwide community screenings, including a screening at the Library of Congress sponsored by the Congressional Black Caucus, and the establishment of a scholarship. A major underwriter of the forgoing initiatives was GlaxoSmithKline. GlaxoSmithKline also established the "Healthy Communities Program" which was an extension of the Partners of the Heart out reach program.
