It was established in 1966 in collaboration with the Karachi IBA, the Ford Foundation, and Indiana University, Bloomington but is currently only affiliated with the University of Dhaka. On April 2010, IBA was gripped into controversy after Prof Mahiuddin Ahmed who had been a student of IBA and serving as Associate Professor was arrested on charges of terrorist and anti state activities. He was reportedly arrested from IBA Teacher's quarters after his organization Hizb ut-Tahrir was plotting to trigger the BDR Mutiny
History
IBA was founded in 1966 in collaboration with Indiana University, Bloomington, USA, under a Ford Foundation Financial Assistance Program with the objective of providing professional training to provide graduate level education to financially challenged students. It is widely regarded as the best business school in the country.
From its inception in 1966 until 1993, the Masters of Business Administration (MBA) was the academic program offered by IBA. In 1993, after a review initiated by Professor Dr. M Shamsul Haque (Former Director, IBA; and former Treasurer, Dhaka University), a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) program was added. Prior to that, in 1970s, the M.Phil and Ph.D. programs were introduced.
IBA has so far had 19 BBA batches and 45 MBA batches. In 2007, IBA introduced an Executive MBA (EMBA) program to meet the huge demand for quality education in EMBA. There are plans to revamp the BBA program (offering double majors, for example), too.
It is the first educational institution in Bangladesh to introduce semester system in contrast of year long traditional system of Bangladesh.
