Ernesto Barbero is an Italian winemaker and viticulturist associated with Bertani, a prominent winery in Italy.[1][2] He is known for his work with Bertani in the development of Amarone wines.[3][4]
Early life and education
[edit]Ernesto Barbero was born in the region of Monferrato in the province of Asti (Italy). Barbero pursued formal studies in enology, focusing on traditional Italian winemaking techniques while also embracing advancements in wine science.[5]
After graduating as a wine technician in 1952, Ernesto Barbero gained experience across Italy and Europe, eventually moving to Veneto in 1961 to manage Bertani, where he refined his skills with local grape varieties, contributing to the development of Amarone wine.[6]
Career at Bertani
[edit]Barbero joined Bertani in 1961 as Cellar Master and held the position until 1989. Established in 1857 by Giovan Battista and Gaetano Bertani, the winery is well-regarded for its production of high-quality wines, including Amarone della Valpolicella. Under Barbero’s direction, Bertani preserved its traditional methods while also adopting newer techniques to enhance quality and sustainability.[7][8]
Barbero is noted for refining the appassimento drying process essential to Amarone and Recioto wines. His approach at Bertani combines traditional methods with modern innovations, enhancing wines like Valpolicella Classico Superiore and Soave to reflect their regional origins.[9][10][11][12]
