Thilo Stadelmann (born 1980 in Lemgo, Germany) is a German computer scientist. He is professor for artificial intelligence and machine learning at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences, where he is also the director of the Centre for Artificial Intelligence at the School of Engineering in Winterthur, Switzerland.[5]

Life and career

Stadelmann finished the Landgraf-Ludwigs-Gymnasium [de] in Gießen with the Abitur in 1999 and went on studying computer science at the University of Applied Sciences Mittelhessen. He finished his doctorate (Dr. rer. nat.) at the University of Marburg in 2010 with a thesis on multimedia analysis.[6]

After holding various specialist and management positions in the automotive industry, he was appointed as a senior lecturer in computer science at the ZHAW in 2013. His research focusses on pattern recognition with deep learning methodology based on a variety of use cases from business, industry and medicine.[7]

He contributed to the Swiss ecosystem around data science, digitalisation and AI, [8][9][10] including as a co-founder and manager in start-ups,[11] academic institutes and consortiae,[12] innovation networks and conferences,[13][14] and as a co-creator and scientific director of digitalisation initiatives.[15][16] Stadelmann is the founding director of the ZHAW Centre for Artificial Intelligence,[17] is the founder and a member of the board of directors of the start-up AlpineAI AG based in Davos, Switzerland,[18] and regularly appears in public as an expert, speaker and interview guest.[19][20][21][22][23][24]

Thilo Stadelmann is a fellow of the European Centre for Living Technology[25] in Venice, Italy, and a senior member of the IEEE.[26] He has been awarded the ZHAW Teaching Prize in 2019[27] and the Impact Award from ZHAW digital in 2022.[28] He has been one of the finalists for ‘The Pascal’ as part of the Swiss Digital Economy Award 2024.[29] His research and students have received several awards. Thilo Stadelmann is married and has a son.
