The Centre for the Future of Democracy is a research institute at the University of Cambridge that was founded by David Runciman and Roberto Stefan Foa[1] in January of 2020.[2][3]
Public Reports
At its launch event, the Centre released its first report, examining worldwide trends in satisfaction with democracy since the late twentieth century. A unique feature of the Centre's reports was their use of data synchronization, merging and combining public opinion data from across the world in order to assemble the largest-ever dataset of changing public attitudes, and the finding that democratic legitimacy had reached a generational low. This resulted in widespread media attention, including articles in the BBC,[4] The Atlantic,[5] and Politico.[6]
It was then followed by a second report ten months later on the topic of youth and democracy, which found this trend to hold across generations.[7] On its release, it briefly reached the number one most popular thread worldwide on Reddit,[8] as well as coverage in The Guardian, Financial Times,[9], the Times,[10] the Daily Telegraph,[11] Reuters,[12] CNN,[13] the BBC,[14] or the Hindustan Times.[15]
A third report was then released in January 2022 in partnership with YouGov, and focused on how the global COVID-19 pandemic had affected support for democracy, political trust, and support for populist parties and politicians.[16] Its findings were widely discussed in international media, including the Financial Times, [17], Bloomberg,[18], the China Daily[19], CNBC,[20], Der Spiegel,[21] The Times,[22] The Guardian,[23] and the Washington Post.[24]
In the wake of the war in Ukraine, the Centre released its fourth report in October 2022. This report examined trends in global attitudes towards the United States, Russia and China, by harmonizing data from more than 175 countries across the world.[25] The findings of this research were covered by international media including the New York Times,[26] Newsweek and Bloomberg News.[27]
Since 2023 the Centre’s work has focused on the war in Ukraine, including published and non-published reports for UK government and international partners.[28][29]
Public Impact
In addition to media coverage, the Centre is notable for its engagement with global policy and decision makers, including the Biden administration Summit for Democracy,[30] the 2022, 2023 and 2024 Council of Europe World Forum for Democracy,[31] the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, and the 2024 Report of the Barcelona Centre for International Affairs .[32] Members have provided testimony to the UK House of Lords,[33] the UK Cabinet Office, Ministry of Defence, Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, and European Commission.
The public work of the Centre is frequently cited in works that discuss the state of global democracy, including books by Martin Wolf,[34] Yascha Mounk, Alastair Campbell[35] and Gideon Rachman.[36]
