Spider-Man: Friend or Foe is a Spider-Man computer and video game based on the comic book series and Spider-Man movies. The game was released on October 2 2007.[1]

Spider-Man: Friend or Foe was originally announced via a promotional page on the back of the Spider-Man 3 video game instruction booklet. The teaser stated that the game would be a "A new twist on the legend. A new take on the movies." The game's website shows a few screenshots of the game and the Green Goblin makes an appearance.[1]

According to the company report, Spider-Man: Friend or Foe is a unique take on the media franchise. Inspired by the movies Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2, and Spider-Man 3, this action/adventure game reinterprets big-screen moments and battles with a humorous twist. Players team up with famous heroes from the Marvel Comics universe to combat villains and then convert them to sidekicks after defeating them in epic boss battles. The game includes a co-op multiplayer mode, as Spider-Man or a sidekick, in locations around the globe, including Tokyo, Egypt, and Nepal.[4]

Plot

In an opening cut scene, Spider-Man finds himself beset by the villains of the first three movies, gaining help from Harry Osborn as he combats the Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, Sandman and Venom. However, all six characters suddenly find themselves targeted by an enemy force and one-by-one, the villains begin disappearing. Meanwhile, Spider-Man is rescued by Nick Fury of SHIELD, who informs him that the meteor which brought the Venom symbiote to Earth had broken up in the Earth's atmosphere and five more pieces had landed in various locations across the globe. Nick Fury and the computer tell Spider-Man that the the creatures that attacked him are P.H.A.N.T.O.M.s (Perpetual Holographic Avatar Nanotech Offensive Monster) which are a combination of the symbiote substances found in the meteor shards and solid light holographic technology. They also explained that someone is using technology to create the P.H.A.N.T.O.M.s and has one of the shards already. Nick Fury sends Spider-Man to retrieve the remaining shards of meteors.

Their first stop is Tokyo, Japan where Nick Fury informs Spider-Man that Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus and Black Cat are in the area. After fighting some P.H.A.N.T.O.M.s, Spider-Man encounters Black Cat who tells him that Doctor Octopus is in the building. She then joins Spider-Man in his mission. Spider-Man finds Doctor Octopus with another solar generator. Spider-Man defeats Doctor Octopus and frees him of the Control Amulet that was controlling him. Doctor Octopus joins up with Spider-Man in his mission. Spider-Man then heads up to the rooftops in Tokyo and discover a P.H.A.N.T.O.M. transmitter on the rooftop of OsCorp's Japanese branch which Spider-Man destroys to prevent other P.H.A.N.T.O.M.s from teleporting in. When Spider-Man reaches the helipad, Green Goblin attacks. After being freed from the Control Amulet, Green Goblin joins Spider-Man on his mission.

Spider-Man's next mission is on Tangaroa Island to obtain the next meteor shard and rescue Iron Fist who went missing in the area. The computer also mentions that Scorpion and Rhino were sighted on that island. Spider-Man comes across another P.H.A.N.T.O.M. transmitter and destroys it. Spider-Man encounters the Scorpion in a lava-filled cave. Spider-Man removes the Control Amulet from Scorpion and he joins up with Spider-Man. Spider-Man finds another P.H.A.N.T.O.M. transmitter and destroys it. Spider-Man rescues Iron Fist from the P.H.A.N.T.O.M.s and he joins Spider-Man in his mission. Spider-Man then encounters the Rhino where Spider-Man fights and frees him from the Control Amulet. Rhino then joins up with Spider-Man.

The third stop is Cairo, Egypt where the next meteor shard it. After making a lie about Nick Fury being a Life Model Decoy, the computer tells Spider-Man that Sandman has been sighted there and is the possible cause of a recent sandstorm. Spider-Man encounters Lizard who is searching for a cure for his condition. Lizard joins Spider-Man on his mission. Spider-Man confirms that Sandman was the source behind the sandstorm and fights him. Freeing Sandman from the Control Amulet, Spider-Man is joined by him.

Spider-Man's next mission is in Transylvania where there is a large number of P.H.A.N.T.O.M.s there which is being depleted by someone. Spider-Man finds another P.H.A.N.T.O.M. transmitter and destroys it. Spider-Man encounters Blade finishing off some P.H.A.N.T.O.M.s and learns the description of the monster guarding the meteor shard....Venom. Spider-Man encounters another P.H.A.N.T.O.M. transmitter in the graveyard and destroys it. Spider-Man encounters Venom at the bell tower of an ancient church and fights him while ungooing the bells. Upon ringing the bells, Spider-Man frees Venom from the Control Amulet and Venom joins up with Spider-Man. Venom also stated that the one responsible had a "bubble for a head."

The final mission is in Nepal which is where the person responsible is headquartered. Arriving in a lower village, Spider-Man encounters another P.H.A.N.T.O.M. transmitter and destroys it. While traveling through the caverns, Spider-Man discovers that the evil genius behind the P.H.A.N.T.O.M. attacks is Mysterio, who intends to use his army of P.H.A.N.T.O.M.s to take over the world, using each shard of the meteor to make them stronger. When Mysterio makes off with two of the meteor shards, Spider-Man is attacked by two P.H.A.N.T.O.M.s whose powers are off the charts. Nick Fury advises Spider-Man to return to the Helicarrier, but Spider-Man ends up breaking the meteor shard he saved and ends up with the black symbiote suit again. At the upper village, Spider-Man encounters another P.H.A.N.T.O.M. transmitter and destroys it. Spider-Man confronts Mysterio in his temple and defeats him. Spider-Man tells Mysterio that his black suit will come off and then reports to Nick Fury that Mysterio is defeated. Spider-Man turns the shards over to Fury, who decides to analyze them and refers to the study as "Project Carnage".[5][6]
