    Eyewitness Correction

I am an eyewitness to the crimes described in the article, "2017 Fresno shooting spree." I observed the shooting of one victim, was the first person to attend to that victim, and testified in the trial. I know with certainty that information cited from the "Fresno Bee" is incorrect. If I correct the inaccuracies, what should I do for citation? Certainly secondary sources such as the "Bee" are good sources, but they are not as good as a someone who is provably a primary source. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Avancuren (talkcontribs) 01:37, 9 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Avancuren We cannot accept personal accounts or personal recollections; Wikipedia summarizes what independent reliable sources state. If those independent sources have reported incorrectly, you will need to take that up with them and get them to issue a correction or retraction, or offer other independent sources that claim the others are incorrect. Verification is an important principle of Wikipedia, and we cannot verify your personal account. 331dot (talk) 02:01, 9 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Thriller

    Dear Wikipedia Team, 11/8/2020 10:37 p.m. EST

I believe that the songs "Baby Be Mine" and "The Lady in my Life" are as essential to Thriller as "Beat It" or "Bille Jean". So can those songs have wiki pages?

Sincerely, Thriller was taken. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Thriller was taken (talkcontribs) 03:38, 9 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Thriller was taken: A subject warrants an article if it is notable, not if it is "essential". Each of the two songs would need to have been the principle subject of multiple independent reliable sources. See WP:N. If they are notable, then they "can have" articles, but they will only get articles if some editor (for example you) decides to write the articles. See WP:YFA. -Arch dude (talk) 04:21, 9 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Alec Trebek

I'm not really computer savvy so can someone please help me and do an edit to Alec Trebek. In the summary section with photo, birth, death, children etc...please change game show host to quiz show host out of respect for him because that is what he would have wanted Thanks Cindy — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2001:569:BE8F:B700:55B7:B488:9290:999A (talk) 07:26, 9 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

You are welcome to make this suggestion at Talk:Alex Trebek; but please understand that Wikipedia summarizes what independent reliable sources state, not necessarily what the subject might have wanted. If you have reliable sources that use the terminology you feel should be used, please offer them. 331dot (talk) 10:17, 9 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

page of person was deleted fully (Edvardas Strončikas on lt.wikipedia.org)

Dear Wikipedia, with this message I want to inform of problem: wikipedia page of person "Edvardas Strončikas" or "Edvardas Stroncikas" that was present for many years on Lithuanian edition of Wikipedia (lt.wikipedia.org) - was deleted in full, and we are unable to find it. We believe this deletion happened in ~1-3 months or from today. Can't get unblocked, have tried everything

    Hello,

My account was blocked for posting an article with promotional language. The admin you flagged my account and blocked me indefinitely recommended that I read up on Wikipedia's policy on promotional posting. I did read all the policies on associations, paid editing, posting etiquette, etc. and now understand my mistake. I was able to change my username to one more appropriate and posted on my talk page my employer/client associations and my understanding of my mistake. I've requested many times to be unblocked, always disclosing that I know what I did wrong and won't do it again. However, no one will unblock me. Even when I ping the original admin who blocked me, they do not respond. I've been trying for many months to be unblocked, please help me? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2605:E000:141D:8A6E:5078:254B:30A9:6F55 (talk) 17:24, 9 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Citing book photographer credit

Aside from author, editor, and translator, a book may have a "photographs by" credit, but the CITATION template doesn't show such a keyword. I know that there's others= but what if google is finding the name of the photographer as if he's an author? From an image of the book cover, he's not an author. What keyword is there for photographer? Pi314m (talk) 02:58, 10 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Pi314m:You are not restricted to using a citation template. You may use ordinary text instead of or in addition to the citation template. -Arch dude (talk) 06:55, 10 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Pi314m: It doesn't seem necessary to add a photo credit, since the purpose of the cite is just to provide the reader with enough info to find the source. —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 02:17, 11 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@BennettEagle: As far as I can see the draft has not been re-submitted for review. If you consider that it is ready for mainspace you can request review by adding {{subst:submit}} to the top of the markup. This will produce a reveiw notice. Please prepare to be patient as reviews can take 8 weeks or more. However, with this edit you removed the decline notice (please do not do this) which would have provided you with a resubmit button. I have restored it and you can now resubmit it by clicking on that button. Eagleash (talk) 06:47, 10 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Location showing up wrong on OpenStreetMap

On Blair Park, the Open Street Map generated from Template:coords is wrong. It's supposed to be on Moraga Avenue southwest of Warren Freeway/CA13, but it shows up as being on the northeast side at Colton Boulevard and Mendoza Drive. When I put in the coordinates to either Google Maps or Open Street Map, the right location comes up. What's wrong? —Naddruf (talk ~ contribs) 08:39, 10 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Naddruf: The map in the article's infobox is generated not by the {{coord}} template, but by the Wikidata item for the park. I've emended the coordinates in the Wikidata item, and the map should now be indicating the correct location (you may need to purge the page to see this). Deor (talk) 19:44, 10 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Deor: Then is there a reason to include the coords in the WP article? —Naddruf (talk ~ contribs) 20:13, 10 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Naddruf: Of course. It's by clicking on the blue-linked coordinates that readers are taken to a GeoHack page, from which they can view a Google map, an OpenStreetMap, a topographical map, or whatever other kind of map they want to look at. Deor (talk) 20:18, 10 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    hi

Hi this is Neel Motwani and this is to inform you that i have changed my screen name as Neel Samarthh

please change it and there are few shows and work of mine not updated please do that . thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by Neelmotwani (talkcontribs) 2020-11-10T08:44:26 (UTC)

Hello, Neelmotwani. There are possibly three separate issues here. The first one (and the most important one, from Wikipedia's point of view), is that you should not be directly editing the article Neel Motwani at all, as you have a conflict of interest. If there are changes you would like made to that article, please make edit requests at the article's talk page.
Secondly, if you would like that article renamed, then please make an edit request, with a citation to a reliable published source for the change of name.
Thirdly, if you would like to change your account name, you may request that at CHU. --ColinFine (talk) 15:37, 10 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    UPE/sock farm?

What's the best place to deal with Matador Network, the creation and maintenance of which is a long series of redlink SPAs, some of which have made edits to other company articles, mostly in the digital media field. It's obviously UPE, probably socking, possibly an actual company who is hiring experienced editors as the tone is plausible (though the sources are not). I tagged it, and I'm thinking of AfDing it after a bit of research, but this feels bigger than that and I'm not sure where to go with it. —valereee (talk) 09:52, 10 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I would suggest asking an admin with an interest in COI. @User:GeneralNotability, I have seen you on the Wikipedia:Conflict of interest/Noticeboard, could you advise? TSventon (talk) 20:56, 10 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
TSventon, valereee, yup, you've got the right person :). This article is setting off a lot of UPE alarm bells. Looking at the history, I see a lot of SPAs (probably work for Matador), a couple that look like mercenaries (blocked Spacehunters as suspected UPE since they've edited recently), a couple that are a little suspicious but not enough for me to take action, and...I have no idea what Sofi89255 is doing. Most of the accounts involved are years stale, so it's not worth doing anything about them, I think just sending it to AfD and handing out that one block should be enough (but I wouldn't be surprised if a few brand new editors happen to show up to that AfD). In the future, valeree, feel free to drop me a note on my talk page if you want an opinion on these sorts of things; COIN is usually a good place to take these, but some of the folks there can be a little bitey at times. And TSventon, feel free to ping me to these kind of questions in the future, this is one of my specialty areas and I'm always happy to lend a hand. GeneralNotability (talk) 02:25, 11 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
GeneralNotability, thanks! That Sofi89255 seems to be going through some category and updating Alexa rankings. They started in May, working alphabetically, and started from the A's again in June. Very specific gnomism, maybe? —valereee (talk) 09:43, 11 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks GeneralNotability. Valereee, I was hesitant to give my normal answer to your query, which is quoting a guideline, as an admin will probably be more familiar with the guidelines than I am. TSventon (talk) 10:13, 11 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
TSventon, yeah, the problem is that we don't appear to have a place that deals specifically with our ongoing mercenary problem. They're more than just the run-of-the-mill COI, who is usually very easily detected. Mercenaries know how to fly under the radar -- like on the Matador article. There was no obvious puffery there. The tone didn't set off any alarms. When I saw the list of what looked like BS awards, I checked the sources, and when I saw the sourcing, I checked the history. The only thing I'm surprised about is the redlinked usernames. I expect mercenaries to turn their usernames blue first thing lol —valereee (talk) 10:30, 11 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Valereee, I was trying to say that Helpdesk is a good place to check the basic policy, but as an admin you probably know (or can find) the basic policy so you may get a quicker or better answer by looking at a relevant talk page and asking an admin who is active there for advice. TSventon (talk) 11:22, 11 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
    Oh, I see! Yes, that's a good idea, thanks! —valereee (talk) 11:25, 11 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Solent University logo update

    Hi,

    Re: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solent_University

I would like to update the logo and image that appears on the Solent University wikipedia page, as well as the motto. I am the Head of Marketing and Communications at Solent, and have noted that the logo is our old one. Google is currently pulling the information through from wikipedia when searching for the University, meaning that prospective students are seeing our old information on the search results page when they search for us. I'm keen to get the information updated as quickly as possible, but am not keen to have to go through the steps of making edits on other pages in order to update our page.

Please can you confirm how I can make this edit?

    Thanks,

@Jagodasad: If the image has a compatible copyright, please add to to Commons instead. If the image does not have a compatible copyright, then you may add it to en.wikipedia, but only under a fair use rationale. Our fair-use criteria are very restrictive because we are paranoid about copyright infringement. The image must meet all 10 of the criteria. Make sure you are convinced that your image meets them. Creation of the Page John Clark Gable

There isn't a "stolen identity issue". It's more than possible for there to be multiple people named "John Clark Gable"; the name itself doesn't strike me as something particularly unique. —A little blue Bori v^_^v Takes a strong man to deny... 19:35, 10 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Please read Wikipedia:Disambiguation. We have thousands of names that are shared. Please also read WP:COI. You should probably not create that page directly yourself. Instead, follow WP:YFA to create a draft, which will result in reviewers trying to help you avoid problems. Please read WP:N. Your page cannot remain on Wikipedia unless your subject is notable by our definition, failure to demonstrate notability is the main reason that articles get declined or deleted, so don't put a lot of time into your article until you are certain you can establish notability. After all of this negative stuff, please don't get discouraged. -Arch dude (talk) 19:48, 10 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Jkdassochartsell, so it looks like your husband's name redirects to his son from a previous marriage, Clark James Gable, is that correct? Interesting family dynamics going on here. :) If your husband is actually notable (he appears to be an off-road racer?) then an article can be created. There needs to be significant coverage in reliable sources. There's an LA Times article here, so he may be notable. You need at least two more like that to prove notability. Don't worry about the redirect; that can be fixed if an article is created, but you have a conflict of interest, so you've got a very long haul ahead of you unless someone else gets interested. NASCARfan0548, are you interested in off-road racing? —valereee (talk) 10:57, 11 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Could you clarify what the error is? I don't see any page protection on the article, so you should be able to edit it directly. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 18:48, 11 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I have fixed this by editing the {{short description}} at the head of the Zeitgeist article. Any article containing the {{annotated link}} may need a "purge" before it will display the corrected version - see Wikipedia:Purge for instructions on how to do this. -- John of Reading (talk) 18:56, 11 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The Wiki page about me is in draft mode

I am a writer and author and am cited throughout Wikiedia and the internet. There is an extensive IMDB page about me (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0032312/) as well as includsion in multiple Simpsons wiki's, as I wrote very populare episode of that that show.

I am profiled in the wiki page about the Simpsons Episode I wrote: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homer%27s_Triple_Bypass My writing partner on that episode has a wikipedia page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Carrington_(voice_actor)

Not know this was not allowable, I hired a certified wikipedia contributor to create my page. Every single thing is meticulously referenced. He would not net me include anything unless it was completely verified to Wikipedia's standards.

If you visit the page that is in draft mode, you can check. Everything is verified.

The issue is -- I am not a celebrity. I don't have fan clubs of my own, (though most Simpsons fan clubs know my work). How else am I supposed to have a Wikipedia page?

I could have asked a friend to start one, or do it myself, but I wanted it done properly. Which it is -- other than the fact I paid someone. I did not know this was a disqualifier.

Regardless, my accomplishments and imprint I believe merit a page.

If everything can very verified (which it can, can you please reinstate the page?— Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.74.244.230 (talk) 19:59, 11 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Notability, not existence, is the metric we use for inclusion. Everything being "verified" is irrelevant if you haven't been written about in newspapers, news magazines, or trade publications. Also, hiring mercenaries only serves to torque us off. —A little blue Bori v^_^v Takes a strong man to deny... 20:05, 11 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The draft in question is Draft:Gary Apple. First of all, there is no such thing as a "certified wikipedia contributor". You got conned by an undisclosed paid editor who has been blocked indefinitely. The best of the references is a brief interview with you in the New York Times that focuses on your joke gadget and toy website, which isn't discussed in the draft. The other references are brief passing mentions of you in connection with that website, or in connection with plays that you wrote. None of them devote significant coverage to Gary Apple as a person. Without significant coverage in several reliable sources, I doubt that the draft will be accepted. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 20:57, 11 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Just a couple of comments – the "certified wikipedia contributor" was not certified by Wikipedia. Most Wikipedia editors (like those who have responded above, and me) disapprove of paid editors, who do badly and for money what we do better and for free. Maproom (talk) 21:08, 11 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Gary Apple. I'm sorry that you've been scammed, but that is actually what has happened. Whatever the guy told you he could do, he was not in a position to do. That's not how Wikipedia works. Even if he had been able to find the references to make the article viable, it would not belong to you or to him, and you would not have had any control over the contents thereafter. In short, a Wikipedia article is not in any way for the benefit of its subject. (Of course, many subjects do get benefit from an article about them - and some get the reverse. But neither of these has anything at all to do with the purposes of Wikipedia). --ColinFine (talk) 23:05, 11 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

OK. Before we get bogged down in the terminology and semantics of what the OP termed, phrased, etc; and what he may or may not have been scammed into ... let's just simply look at the article for what it is: admissible or not? He could have not been forthright with his backstory and simply published the article to a main space and probably never had a single eye question it. From what I'm seeing, it does pass for General Notability. So, let's let the other stuff slide and not get sidetracked into the "how" and "why" but more notability. Simply googling some of his content credits such as "Christmas in Hell" renders enough secondary sources, and although the Bibliography section is not formatted correctly, that can easily be rectified. His television work is substantial and checks out, and the references provided are WP acceptable sources: Newsday, New York Times, Chicago Tribune, etc. I'm sure, a seasoned WP editor could fix all of this in a matter of minutes. I would suggest helping this truthful BLP rather than piling on the "know-it-all" attitude that he got duped and "that's not how WP works". I would say the article is strong enough for inclusion; but needs an experienced eye at WP to get it back on track. Maineartists (talk) 17:42, 12 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Privacy violation-potential stalker

There's an anonymous user who altered an article about my family member that no one outside my family knows. The family member is a public figure and has very controversial opinions, with many people who disagree to the point of threats. This is at the very least damaging and at worst potentially harmful information to be made public. Privacy laws allow for anonymity through IP addresses, however I would like to argue that the potential for harm overrides this policy and I would like to identify the user if possible.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Handelradio (talkcontribs)

If you identify the article in question, we can investigate and possibly protect the article against IP editing if justified by policy. There is no way that anyone on Wikipedia can help you identify the person using an IP address. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 21:02, 11 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Is the information properly sourced? If so, what do you mean by "that no one outside my family knows"? --Orange Mike | Talk 21:07, 11 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The article in question appears to be Bill Handel and the contentious material about a marriage separation is unreferenced. I will take a close look and warn the responsible party. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 21:12, 11 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict)@Handelradio: If the information is not cited to a reliable source, you can and should remove it immediately: see WP:BLP. This directive overrides our guideline that you should not edit the article directly due to your WP:COI. I recommend that you continue to handle this via our processes here, which are generally quick and effective. You are free to pursue off-wiki legal action such as asking for help with the identity of the anonymous editor through a lawyer. However, if you do, you are prohibited from any further editing of Wikipedia: see WP:LEGAL. -Arch dude (talk) 21:19, 11 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Handelradio, I have semi-protected the article and removed the unreferenced "Personal life" section, which has been a magnet for contentious editing. Please do not add personal comments like "none of your business" to the article. That simply isn't permitted in Wikipedia articles. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 21:27, 11 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Will I be notified if the user is identified? The specifics (names) mentioned in the separation were known only to my family. It is very concerning that someone else publicly posted the situation. I would like to be kept informed if possible. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Handelradio (talkcontribs) 05:40, 12 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    • @Handelradio: No website can reliably link an IP address to a person. This is not due to legal considerations, but technical ones. Hence "Wikipedia" as a whole cannot do that identification, even if we wished to. If someone can, it is the internet service provider who is managing the IP address pool; such an organization will likely not give out personal details of their customers without being compelled by legal authority (either a court order or a government request). The most Wikipedia can do in terms of identification is linking an account name to an IP address or addresses (but that is not even needed in the case of "anonymous" editors since their IP address is posted).
You should consult a qualified attorney if you intend to take any legal action against the IP editor who posted personal details, but my free advice is: don't. I very much doubt the allegations in the article history would be legally actionable in a US jurisdiction, and even if they were the cost of litigation would be far out of proportion of any provable reputational damages.
In addition to the semi-protection that was applied, the only real thing you could ask for on the Wikipedia side is to remove the article history from public view ("oversight"). I see an argument based on criterion #1 "removal of non-public personal information", though in my eyes it is fairly weak. Fill out this form if you want to request oversight. Hello, BacktoSchoolForever0700: you're right, that is a bug, and the Phabricator page you were directed to is the bug report. You can see that a couple of developers were discussing it yesterday, but all that happened today was that another instance of the bug was merged into that report, and some more developers were added to the bug report as watchers. I don't think there's anything you can do but wait until they fix it. I've added a comment which may or may not be helpful. Hello, DJddog5. If you look at the page History, you will see that Kaltenmeyer edited the article after you did, with the comment " removed extraneous text, replaced: , Untied States → United States, typo(s) fixed: aswell → as well". They may have thought that your edits were unhelpful, or they may have accidentally removed them: I haven't investigated. Either way, the thing to do now is to open a discussion with them and any other interested editors on the article's talk page Talk:Palace Entertainment. See WP:BRD. (By the way: your edits aren't lost: they're there in the history, so if the consensus is to restore them, that can be done). --ColinFine (talk) 23:32, 11 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Lemmings

Apparently, there is a video game called Lemmings published by Sirius Software in 1980s for the Apple II: https://www.mobygames.com/game/apple2/lemmings_____

I only learned of the game's existence from a comment by User:BOZ at Talk:Lemmings (video game). I have never played it, because I have never owned (or even got a chance to use) an Apple II. So the online resources are all I know about the game.

This might still deserve an article in Wikipedia because it's the first ever video game named Lemmings, predating the far more famous game Lemmings (video game) by nine years. Should I write a Wikipedia article about it? JIP | Talk 23:45, 11 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

If you can find enough sources to show the game is notable, yes. See WP:N. The sources don't need to be online. RudolfRed (talk) 23:59, 11 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
There are the two reviews I mentioned on the talk page, and I thought I had found more, but not yet. There are probably more sources out there in early 80s magazines that I have not located yet. BOZ (talk) 00:52, 12 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia has eight separate articles, on various Lemmings releases. See Category: Lemmings games.   Maproom (talk) 08:34, 12 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The game by Sirius Software does not have anything to do with the Lemmings games. It's just named "Lemmings", that's all. JIP | Talk 10:03, 12 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Messed up on the edit history.

    Hello!

I've been using Wikipedia for years, but I have never edited anything until today. I went to the article on the dollar sign (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dollar_sign) and noticed that the Brazilian real wasn't listed in the list of countries that also use the dollar sign. The sign for a Brazilian real is R$ so I attempted to add it to the list. After I did this I noticed that the other currencies in the list didn't capitalize the name of the currency so I made a new edit. After this I noticed it was no longer in alphabetical order, and made another. I then tried to delete my previous edits and accidentally made more edits. The edit history is now completely cluttered with small minor edits. Is there anyway that these edits can be deleted from the edit history from 00:09, 12 November 2020‎ to 00:23, 12 November 2020 in order to clean up the history, to erase my IP before I created an account, and to save me the embarrassment? Afterwards I will make the correction in one edit so that it is more proper. Thanks Yukari IV (talk) 00:35, 12 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

While the edits will likely stay (for attribution purposes) I would contact an administrator privately to discuss redacting your IP address from the history. —A little blue Bori v^_^v Takes a strong man to deny... 00:39, 12 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
How would I go about doing this? Yukari IV (talk) 00:47, 12 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
If you have an email address associated with your account, you can navigate to a administrator's user talk page, where there should be an "email this user" function on the left hand side. Be sure to provide the diffs of the edits whose attribution you'd want redacted. —A little blue Bori v^_^v Takes a strong man to deny... 00:57, 12 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Article on Zvi Migdal

The reference to the novel “The Thirteenth Man” and the film from it “Last Embrace” needs a correction. “ The 1979 movie Last Embrace by Jonathan Demme (based on the novel The Thirteenth Man by Murray Teigh Bloom and a screenplay by David Shaber[21]) features a woman who, taking the role of the biblical avenger Goel Hadam, serially kills the members of the New York Lower East Side Zwi Migdal who enslaved her grandmother.”

    Joe Biden bio

You erroneously state that Joseph Robinette Biden, "successfully challenged incumbent President Donald J. Trump to become the 46th President of the United States." This is an inaccurate statement. Please immediately remove this patently false statement. It would be more prudent to await the official results of this highly contested election. You are clearly misrepresenting the facts of the situation as it currently stands. Given the tension filled state of the country this misinformation is viewed as inflammatory and may very well add to an increase in anxiety among a large majority of the country.
