About including "songwriter" in the lede sentence

[edit]

MOS:ROLEBIO states that only the most notable of roles/professions/occupations should be stated in the lede sentence in describing the subject. While Gomez does have songwriting credits across her albums, the one problem I see is there is no mention at all in the article expounding on her songwriting artistry, something that is definitely not lacking in articles about other artists who are notable songwriters, like Taylor Swift, Lionel Richie, Carole King or Alanis Morissette, for example, among lots of others. Examples of what can be included are their inspiration to write (or compose, in terms of the music itself compared to the lyrics) and whether they have been recognized via awards or other accolades related to songwriting (like an ASCAP award or the Grammy award for Song of the Year). But the point is that it makes no sense to state her being a songwriter if there is no coverage at all in the article demonstrating notability about it. It definitely surprised me to see how the "artistry" section says nothing about lyrics, themes, or anything else that pertains to songwriting. That would be an ideal place to elaborate on them. SNUGGUMS (talk / edits) 19:26, 1 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

We've been over this so many times on Wikipedia. The first sentence of the lede lists the most notable professions of the artist. The infobox lists the most notable as well as secondary professions. Selena Gomez has 73 songwriting credits, incl. many credits pertaining to her most recent material. She is a regular co-writer of some of her work, and songwriter is factually one of her main professions, "notable" or not. This is just to let readers know she is a singer and songwriter (as opposed to singer-songwriter). Israell (talk) 06:27, 20 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I only added "songwriter" to the infobox, not the lede (another editor added it to the lede). And I've included a source, which is sufficient. The fact is, more and more and more singers these days also write or co-write some of their songs at least. It's becoming part for the course and it's a big part of their artistry. Without their contributions to the writing, the songs would be incomplete. Israell (talk) 06:58, 20 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Selena Gomez is, and may be, a regular writer of her work. But the ASCAP repertoire, as a source, is not sufficient to underline, and support, the mention of songwriters in the role bio. There needs to be sourcing and decent sized, reliable, and comprehensive prose in the artistry section.

Personally, I have never heard anyone refer to Gomez as a “songwriter”, nor have I found any articles describing her as such. She seems more like an artist that camps write songs for. Of course, I don't want to undermine Gomez's abilities as a songwriter, but that seems to be the general perception about her or at least what I've heard so far. @Ben0006, Mirrored7, and SNUGGUMS: I've just expanded the artistry section to include Gomez' songwriting craft. Israell (talk) 04:10, 24 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Watagwaan and MPFitz1968: 1. The article has a "Songwriting" section that elaborates on Selena Gomez' songwriting. It includes commentaries from her peers in the industry who vouch for her songwriting. 2. Selena Gomez now has 76 songwriting credits. 3.She may not be a "singer-songwriter" (as in a songwriter who authors and composes most or all of their work alone and oftentimes provide the sole musical accompaniment to an entire song), but she is still a "singer AND songwriter" (she fits the criteria for the latter: singer and songwriter). Many songs these days like Lil Nas X's "Industry Baby" have up to 9 co-writers; those who co-write are songwriters. It is one of her main occupations, so it is relevant for the infobox. in the following passage; "Both Gomez and Rare Beauty were heavily criticized for their misleading statement which implied solidarity with the people of Gaza, whilst they donated funds to Magen David Adom, which is an auxiliary service to the Israel Defense Forces who are implicated in war crimes against the people of Gaza."

1. Magen David Adom is not an auxiliary service to the Israel Defense Forces. It is an independent organization. according to MAGEN DAVID ADOM LAW 5710/1950 As amended 5736/1976, MDA can become an auxiliary service of the Medical Service of the Defense Army of Israel in time of war. which does not happen either.

2. IDF is not implicated in war crimes, it is accused of such crimes, which is unproven. This is not a fact, but an editors opinion.

"implicated in" should be changed to "accused of". Temp1111 (talk) 06:20, 2 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This sentence is unnecessary to begin with and should be removed. That IDF is accused of war crimes is inconsequential to this article. The sentence above that states they were "heavily criticized... for implied solidarity with people of Gaza" is an OPINION, not a fact. The fact is that there was some criticism on both sides, but more importantly that Gomez stated that she was not taking sides in the conflict and was praying for all. There was no unilateral implied solidarity with Gaza, nor any need to mention IDF in relation to war crimes. Footnote 570 does not accurately portray Gomez' bilateral support to the conflict. Add category relevant to her gender

Not done even when accurate, her race doesn't appear to be a trait she's particularly noted for (at least compared to singing, acting, or even business endeavors) and thus wouldn't be worth adding per WP:Overcategorization#Non-defining characteristics. How is Julia Michaels, Becky G, Melanie Martinez, etc be included but not Selena Gomez who is nominated for Latin Grammys??
Your statement is biased and factually incorrect, misuse of power. Ethical2022Editor (talk) 16:24, 11 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
For what it's worth, I wouldn't recommend including it for those named individuals either for similar reasons, and this has nothing to do with bias nor is there any "power" involved. We should save the category for instances where someone is prominently noted for such heritage and Latin Grammy nominations aren't enough on their own to indicate this. In the "Other Ventures" part of the page, more specifically, in the "Other charity work" topic, the last paragraph refering to the 2023 Hamas-Israel conflict, this specific part of the paragraph "Both Gomez and Rare Beauty were heavily criticized for their misleading statement which implied solidarity with the people of Gaza, whilst they donated funds to Magen David Adom, which is an auxiliary service to the Israel Defense Forces who are implicated in war crimes against the people of Gaza." should be deleted given the fact it was proven Rare Beauty had donated an amount to a Pro-Palestine foundation.
