Geostub badassery

I noticed you did a pretty good job on Codys Corner, Florida -- I have been seeing a lot of geostubs at AfD that seem to be of a similar nature. Most of them, nobody is able to find any sources for, but if you'd like, I can let you know when I find one that looks like it can be saved. jp×g 10:14, 25 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, JPxG.
I still have a few things I'd like to add at Codys Corner, including a historic map. But it's in much better shape than it was. For background, when I was a kid, I lived in the hamlet of Monti, Iowa, which would fail one of those "I checked the map but only found four houses - Delete" searches some editors do prior to, or during, AFD. Despite the small size of some communities, there's usually some history there: sometimes a lot, like in Farnhurst, Delaware, which just survived deletion. I worked in an academic library for over 15 years, and still have access to resources some editors might not have.
I'm glad these microstubs are getting sorted, though. I'm happy to take a look at ones that you think might be salvageable. Feel free to ping me. Firsfron of Ronchester 10:47, 25 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Got a few more for you that nobody else has had much to say about yet: Windsor Farms, P and W Patch, and Pine Waters (all in Pennsylvania). jp×g 23:35, 26 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I do see some results for P and W Patch in area papers, but some involve a murder trial and may not be appropriate for an encyclopedia article. I'll see what can be done after dinner. BTW, congrats on your 40,000th edit! Woot! :) Firsfron of Ronchester 23:41, 26 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
"Shit on a shingle" made me laugh pretty hard. Speaking of shit, there's still a crapload of work I need to do on Biddles Corner, Delaware, but that's the best I could do tonight. I'll work on it more this week, with the hope that referenced pieces of the article don't end up missing. But if you have more Geography AFDs to suggest JPxG, I'm open to looking... or !voting to delete, if they're actual garbage. Most places at AFD, of course, won't have four buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. (And hopefully this conversation isn't so old you won't be able to figure out where I typed this). Firsfron of Ronchester 06:44, 30 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Stony Island (Michigan)

On 13 September 2021, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Stony Island (Michigan), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Stony Island (Michigan)), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Ongoing discussion on Talk:Silicon Valley

Hi JPxG, hope all is well! I am reaching out because there is an important ongoing discussion at Talk:Silicon Valley#RfC: Inclusion criteria of Silicon Valley, Santa Clara Valley and Santa Clara County, California concerning whether Silicon Valley is a region or simply a monicker for the local tech industry and whether it should be regarded as such both in its article and in references to it across Wikipedia. I invite you to join the discussion and present your thoughts on the matter, as more opinions are sorely needed to build any type of understanding or consensus. Whether you agree with my arguments or not, your opinion is valuable to the discussion. Best, Cristiano Tomás (talk) 05:37, 13 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@31.219.89.42: What if an archived version of the post could be found? jp×g 05:22, 22 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

NCMEC

I "Removed line that was not supported by the reference..." and you asked me for a reference? How can I provide a reference to support the fact that a statement is not supported by its reference???? No one is criticizing the NCMEC - they are criticizing Apple.

It was a criticism of a joint venture that both organizations went in on, and sources mention both of them (including the "screeching voices of the minority" comments). I don't think they would have gotten mentioned in every article unless there was something to justify it -- it's not like they were incidentally involved. Everyone was probably using Schrader valves to fill up their tires to drive to the press conference, but that's not mentioned, whereas NCMEC is. jp×g 07:29, 22 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Appreciate the response. Your misunderstanding is in believing this is a joint venture. It is not. The Center's relation to the privacy-impacting changes is in fact little more than incidental. Verizon, Google, Microsoft, Dropbox, Facebook, Twitter, Cloudflare, and hundreds of other companies run this same operation. They receive a set of CSAM hashes from NCMEC and use whatever means they decide to scan content on their system, match suspected imagery, and make reports. The Center purposefully remains at arms-length from implementation because - among other reasons - its charter and appropriation from Congress make any resulting prosecutions subject to 4th amendment issues.

Furthermore, if you need references, just look at who is being attributed for the 'plan' or 'tech' or 'updates' or 'features:'

And you mention the "screeching" quote. Consider the entire thing:

Team Apple,

I wanted to share a note of encouragement to say that everyone at NCMEC is SO PROUD of each of you and the incredible decisions you have made in the name of prioritizing child protection.

It’s been invigorating for our entire team to see (and play a small role in) what you unveiled today...[1]

The Center is no stranger to controversy around the methods its partners (NGOs, for-profits, and governments) may choose to stop the creation and transfer of CSAM and it purposefully stays at arms-length. This case is no different. There is no press release and I am sure no tweets about this from the Center. It is simply providing a limited service it is federally-required to provide. And Apple has no other choice -- the org is the only one which may legally maintain a database of such content and employ people to review it.

Your edits to Tsukihime

Hello! You reverted my edits and left me a message saying "removed content without adequately explaining why. In the future, it would be helpful to others if you described your changes to Wikipedia with an edit summary". If you had actually looked at the edit summary, you would have noticed that it mentioned the talk page, where the edits were extensively explained. This sort of behaviour can be quite disruptive, so it would be appreciated if you would refrain from it. 2404:2D00:5000:841:8CD7:6427:A34C:5D4B (talk) 10:36, 22 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

here's the diff: i removed content tagged as contradictory since may 2021 for the following reason: XDG Base Directory Specification is for user directories (except $XDG_DATA_DIRS); this is not about the computer's file system hierarchy as described in this article. which is absolutely true. contrary to what you said i added a comment for my edit, though very concise: not relevant which is also true. i'm sick of stupid patrollers reverting ips on a subject on which they don't know jack just because they're ips: you probably didn't even read my modification! If this was a mistake, don't worry, the removed content has been restored. LOL 2A01:E0A:4EA:8C50:1B94:8B7C:846D:DD9E (talk) 15:51, 22 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Continuing out-of-scope and unsourced additions

Hi JPxG, and excuse me for randomly popping up on your talk page uninvited.

You recently made some changes to Kshatriya Kulavantas, reverting the same problem edits that I had also changed previously and again, reverted since. You have changed it back more than once, as have I and other editors. That same editor, or several editors, is making similar edits on Hardauna, which you have also reverted, I think.

Anyway, I wanted to let you know, that if they make the same edit again - which they are almost certain to do - I won't be restoring it again. Unfortunately, my last reversion was undone by the anti-vandal bot, so I'm not going near the page again. It's routine WP stuff, I know, but I cannot stand that: It gives me the creeps, and makes me feel like I'm the one being "deprecated" - rather than that editor's alleged "sources"! So I'm just letting you know, in the hope you will continue to notice those pages / that editor, as you have been. Sorry for the long read. Thanks. 49.177.107.107 (talk) 12:34, 23 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I certainly don't mind people popping in! Thanks for letting me know. I got confused for a minute when I was looking through the page history (I think I confused you with another IP address) but now I can see what you're talking about. It's messed up! I can't guarantee I will remember to keep an eye on it, but I'll do my best! jp×g 08:22, 24 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

New page reviewer granted

Hi JPxG. Your account has been added to the "New page reviewers" user group. Please check back at WP:PERM in case your user right is time limited or probationary. This user group allows you to review new pages through the Curation system and mark them as patrolled, tag them for maintenance issues, or nominate them for deletion. The list of articles awaiting review is located at the New Pages Feed. New page reviewing is vital to maintaining the integrity of the encyclopedia. If you have not already done so, you must read the tutorial at New Pages Review, the linked guides and essays, and fully understand the deletion policy. If you need any help or want to discuss the process, you are welcome to use the new page reviewer talk page. In addition, please remember:

  • Be nice to new editors. They are usually not aware that they are doing anything wrong. Do make use of the message feature when tagging pages for maintenance so that they are aware.
  • You will frequently be asked by users to explain why their page is being deleted. Please be formal and polite in your approach to them – even if they are not.
  • If you are not sure what to do with a page, don't review it – just leave it for another reviewer.
  • Accuracy is more important than speed. Take your time to patrol each page. Use the message feature to communicate with article creators and offer advice as much as possible.

The reviewer right does not change your status or how you can edit articles. If you no longer want this user right, you also may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. In cases of abuse or persistent inaccuracy of reviewing, or long-term inactivity, the right may be withdrawn at administrator discretion. Anarchyte (talk) 13:13, 23 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Jimmy McNulty

Hello, this is in response to the message you left on my talk page regarding an edit to “Jimmy McNulty”. I’m not sure why you’ve reverted the edit and asked for an explanation. I stated “deleted redundant information” as the summary of my edit. If you read the article, it would be plain to see that the paragraph I deleted repeats the content of a different paragraph and does not offer any additional info. I am going to restore my revision. 98.13.56.126 (talk) 01:59, 24 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, JxPG has asked me to take a look since they're still watching the series, and upon review I think I agree with your deletion, although in future it may be helpful to state why information is redundant. Hope this helps, -- Asartea Talk | Contribs 08:19, 24 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm. This came up while I was patrolling RecentChanges; I would take a more in-depth look at the article to see what you're talking about, but I'm not finished watching The Wire, so I asked someone else to take a look it for me. If they say my revert was dumb, it was dumb, and feel free to override it. jp×g 22:09, 25 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

September 2021 Guild of Copy Editors newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors September 2021 Newsletter

Hello and welcome to the September GOCE newsletter, a brief update of Guild activities since June 2021.

                 Current and upcoming events

September Drive: Our current backlog-elimination drive is open until 23:59 on 30 September (UTC) and is open to all copy editors. Sign up today!

Drive and Blitz reports

June Blitz: From 20 to 26 June, 6 participating editors claimed 16 copy edits, focusing on requests and articles tagged in March and April. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

July Drive: Almost 575,000 words of articles were copy edited for this event. Of the 24 people who signed up, 18 copyedited at least one article. Final results and awards are listed here.

August Blitz: From 15 to 21 August, we copy edited articles tagged in April and May 2021 and requests. 9 participating editors completed 17 copy edits on the blitz. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

Other news

June election: Jonesey95 was chosen to continue as lead coordinator, assisted by Dhtwiki, Tenryuu, and Miniapolis.

New maintenance template added to our project scope: After a short discussion in June, we added {{cleanup tense}} to the list of maintenance templates that adds articles to the Guild's copy editing backlog categories. This change added 198 articles, spread over 97 months of backlog, to our queue. We processed all of those articles except for those from the three or four most recent months during the July backlog elimination drive (Here's a link to a "tense" discussion during the drive).

Progress report: As of 18:26, 24 September 2021 (UTC), GOCE copyeditors have processed 468 requests since 1 January and there were 60 requests awaiting completion on the Requests page. The backlog of articles tagged for copy-editing stood at 433 (see monthly progress graph above).

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators Jonesey95, Dhtwiki, Tenryuu, and Miniapolis.

Your GA nomination of Powder House Island

Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article Powder House Island you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. This process may take up to 7 days. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments you might have during this period. Message delivered by Legobot, on behalf of Jaguar -- Jaguar (talk) 11:41, 2 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Your GA nomination of Powder House Island

The article Powder House Island you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:Powder House Island for comments about the article. Well done! If the article has not already appeared on the main page as a "Did you know" item, or as a bold link under "In the News" or in the "On This Day" prose section, you can nominate it within the next seven days to appear in DYK. Bolded names with dates listed at the bottom of the "On This Day" column do not affect DYK eligibility. Sorry to bother you. Your name jumped out as the user reverting issues at Apolinario Mabini. I've just spent sometime correcting cite errors at the article, but now looking at the edit history it appears another IP has been deleting refs from the article and the whole lot might have to be rolled back.

If you look at the differences between you last edit and the current article [14] I don't think there's anything constructive. My edits only undo some of the damage that has been done.

What do you think? Thanks 89.241.33.89 (talk) 20:13, 3 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Correct

You are correct. At this time I am busy working on other articles, and I am doing my best to stay out of that very personal and contentious AfD. I have done all I can there and at this point it is just repetitive. You are right though that I certainly did not comport myself well with that post. Lightburst (talk) 23:00, 5 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Huggle revert?

User:JPxG, before reverting me, can you see the discussion at Talk:Breast_tax#Redirect? An IP is disrupting the page by removing the redirect when the consensus is towards the redirect and his only reason is "Upper caste people want to hide this totally".[19] I am basically reverting the vandalism here. Can you self-revert your restoration of the redirect? 27.57.177.155 (talk) 03:59, 8 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I see you are editing both manually and with automated tool after I made this message above. Can you reply? 27.57.177.155 (talk) 04:16, 8 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hold on, let me take a look. jp×g 04:19, 8 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, this looks to me like a complicated enough issue that it should be resolved by an AfD rather than local talk page consensus... there was an AfD last year and a DRV that concluded "keep" (not "redirect"). I think your best bet here would be to renominate for deletion, if you feel that strongly about it. jp×g 04:27, 8 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Question

I would rather answer your question here, than create more work for the closer of the RfC. I think this RfC would have been as just avoidable as the first one, had Shibbolethink agreed to stick to the sources. Unfortunately, this is not the case, and JoelleJay is arguing that this group's claims aren't WP:DUE, while PaleoNeonate argues that the page should not have passed WP:AFD. I actually don't have a problem calling them activists, so long as it's not the only descriptor, and I also don't mind citing WP:MEDRS for BALANCE, where possible. However, due to the censorship in China, balance won't actually be possible, and this is a key point that editors will have to grapple with for a long time to come. 217.35.76.147 (talk) 22:02, 10 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
