Disambig
I think there should be a proper disambiguation between this article and handshake, rather than the klugey use of 'hanshake' vs. 'handshaking'. --Smack (talk) 05:03, 4 May 2005 (UTC)
Cleanup
I added {{cleanup}} because this article seems short and messy as it currently stands. It's barely more then a dictdef, and seems a little incoherent. Maybe it is just a stub that needs expanding. What do others think? --DragonHawk 20:49, 16 September 2006 (UTC)
I agree. The article definitely needs to be expanded. By the way, sorry but I don't know how to make this into a proper subcomment. --PaladinWriter (talk) 13:06, 24 February 2008 (UTC)
I would like to add that it needs to include both hardware handshaking (eg. RTS/CTS and the more abstract doublehandshaking theory) and messaging handshaking (eg. XON/XOFF). At the moment it really just describes autonegociation, not handshaking (which is a sychronisation or flowcontrol technique)
BitTorrent
This might not be related however whenever a computer calls another computer in the BitTorrent protocol, it is called a Handshake. And seeing as how dial-up is becoming an antiquated technology (or has become...) perhaps this should replace major use. Animated Gif
The animated gif in the examples section is difficult to read. The animation happens too quickly to read the text, let alone absorb the information and understand the concept. I don't know how much value is gained from the animation over just using the final frame as a static image. Perhaps the looping can be removed, so that it only animates once. Or, at least, pause on the final frame before looping. That final frame should be visible for 3 seconds or more. Gilly3 (talk) 22:05, 2 July 2014 (UTC)
Added "technical" tag
I have a decent grasp on the English language and I had a hard time figuring out what the first sentence meant. JarmihiGOCE (talk) 02:03, 11 July 2015 (UTC)

Note there is no proper German equivalent for Handshaking, only for flow control of data. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.105.160.157 (talk) 16:28, 28 July 2016 (UTC)

Distinction from flow control
Hi, a sentence or two about the distinction of handshaking from flow control would be appropriate. The brief mention of flow control in the last paragraph is helpful but not adequate. The explanation would fit well in the introduction? Regards, ... PeterEasthope (talk) 19:34, 17 September 2020 (UTC)
Handshaking in, e.g., buses, software
The article currently has several paragraphs about handshaking in telecommunications and several sections specific to telecommunications. There are no sections specific to handshaking in, e.g., buses, channels, software. I'm prepared to add material relating to handshaking between a hypervisor and programs running in guest virtual machines, but someone with hardware expertis would need to do the sections on busses and channels. Also, it would be nice to have sections on other cases of software handshaking. --Shmuel (Seymour J.) Metz Username:Chatul (talk) 15:38, 12 December 2021 (UTC)

Handshaking → Handshake (computing) – hand shaking redirects to handshake. This should too. That is what people are most likely to be looking for when they type in "handshaking". 99.101.56.68 (talk) 18:39, 29 October 2022 (UTC)
- Support per nomination. I think a lot of people would find it weird that "Handshaking" takes them to a page about computing. aaronneallucas (talk) 21:49, 29 October 2022 (UTC)
- Support, although Handshake (networking) may be more accurate. 162 etc. (talk) 22:00, 29 October 2022 (UTC)
- Move to Handshake (networking) per the above suggestion and redirect Handshaking to Handshake. Rreagan007 (talk) 04:23, 30 October 2022 (UTC)
- oppose - Handshaking is not just for networks. There is handshaking in software and there is handshaking on channels and Busses. --Shmuel (Seymour J.) Metz Username:Chatul (talk) 17:19, 30 October 2022 (UTC)
- Then maybe handshake (computing) is a better title. Handshaking should however redirect to handshake. 99.101.56.68 (talk) 11:55, 31 October 2022 (UTC)
- Support page move to a sensible title. Disambiguating should definitely be required as this it not as well known as the human action equivalent. Iggy (Swan) (Contribs) 21:44, 31 October 2022 (UTC)
