Intro

[edit]

I have tidied up part of the introduction that was not well written grammatically however I feel there is also an issue with the following sentence "There are progressives trying to argue that Sharia is compatible with democracy, human rights, freedom of thought, women's rights and banking." This does not read as neutral language as well as the term progressive being in my humble view somewhat vague and incidental. Imo it would be better to say "some commentators argue that" and leave it there. Firestar47 (talk) 16:08, 21 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

"Sharia"

[edit]

Should the term "Sharia" be written in upper or lowercase? JackkBrown (talk) 15:34, 26 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

dictionary.com records usage as uppercase in American English, lowercase in British English. OED suggests uppercase. Collins goes for lowercase, as does Cambridge, while Merriam-Webster hedges its bets and just states "often capitalized". Bazza (talk) 16:56, 26 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Bazza 7: thanks man! How confusing; in fact, in the article "sharia" is written in both lower and uppercase. I would immediately capitalise all the words "sharia", but the article is really too long to try to correct it (I would only waste time). JackkBrown (talk) 17:03, 26 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Lede NPOV

[edit]

I think the lede should differentiate between enforcing Sharia law by the state and it being an informal law in some societies. Alexanderkowal (talk) 18:27, 13 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Section "Contemporary debates and controversies"

[edit]

According to Wikipedia:Criticism#Philosophy, religion, or politics for religious topics it's usually "appropriate to have a "Criticism" section or "Criticism of ..." subarticle." @Anarchyte since you reverted renaming this section to "Criticism", do you support splitting this section into "Criticism of Sharia" article, and only keeping a short summary here? The section seems to me to be long enough. HudecEmil (talk) 20:35, 26 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@HudecEmil, No need, We already have enough WP:POVFORKS related to critique of Islam and Muslims etc. StarkReport (talk) 11:00, 27 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Agree on WP:POVFORKS. @StarkReport would you support renaming the section "Contemporary debates and controversies" to "Criticism" in line wtih Wikipedia:Criticism#Philosophy, religion, or politics? HudecEmil (talk) 17:31, 27 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@HudecEmil, The current title appears to more accurately reflect the content, as it primarily addresses the broader heated discourse surrounding Sharia and its implications, rather than strictly focusing on criticisms. We already have articles that deals with such matters such as "Criticism of Islamism, "Islamic fundamentalism", Criticism of Islam", "Islam and violence" and others.
Most of those articles can be coalesced into one, but, as I said "We already have enough WP:POVFORKS". StarkReport (talk) 17:52, 27 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have no comment on whether it should be split, I just oppose the section being titled "Criticism". Anarchyte (talk) 08:49, 29 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

First paragraph

[edit]

The first paragraph of the article does not make grammatical sense. Sentences are not complete. VickiMeagher (talk) 06:18, 30 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@NGC 628 has been iterating on this article for around a year. I do not want to demean their contributions in toto, but it is distressing that in some ways this article has become a total mess in terms of organization, as well as English grammar and style. I really hope someone can take a closer look and make copyedits or reversions as necessary, as the article in its present state is rather unacceptable despite the merits of the additions: compare with this version immediately preceding their efforts. Remsense ‥  06:25, 30 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I do not feel comfortable doing so, but one of my immediate impulses would be to revert to this previous version and reintroduce @NGC 628's substantial improvements piecemeal. Remsense ‥  06:26, 30 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I see you as more interested in Chinese culture than Islamic tradition. Yet, if you able to write more detail about the issues that bother you about the final version of this article, I can work on it.NGC 628 (talk) 06:57, 30 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
