^Speed, F. Maurice; Cameron-Wilson, James (1997). Film Review. W. H. Allen Ltd. p. 161. Independence Day grosses $772.4 million, making it the second highest-grossing movie of all time, after Jurassic Park
Version 1.0 includes two sections: "Highest-grossing franchises" and "Highest-grossing film series."
The "Highest-grossing franchises" is exactly like the "Highest-grossing franchises and film series" section found here, with the exception that the title of the section has been changed.
The "Highest-grossing film series" separates various film series. As such, while the "Highest-grossing franchises" lumps Burton's Joker along with Nolan's Joker and even the 1966 Joker, the "Highest-grossing film series" section separates each series into a separate cinematic universe (or, in the case of Star Trek, into a separate cinematic multiverse).
It has been proposed that the List_of_highest-grossing_films page include both a "Highest-grossing franchises" section and a "Highest-grossing film series" section. Here is what that might look like:
Prior to 2000, only seven series had grossed over $1 billion at the box office: James Bond,[2]Star Wars,[3]Indiana Jones,[4]Rocky,[5][6][7]Batman,[8]Jurassic Park[9] and Star Trek.[10] Since the turn of the century that number has increased to over thirty;[11] this is partly due to inflation and market growth, but also to Hollywood's adoption of the franchise model: films that have built-in brand recognition, such as being based on a well known literary source (The Lord of the Rings) or an established character (Indiana Jones). The methodology is based on the concept that films associated with things audiences are already familiar with can be more effectively marketed to them, and as such are known as "pre-sold" films within the industry.[12] The Harry Potter series has grossed the most, amassing nearly $8 billion over eight films at the box office, although the EONJames Bond series is the highest grossing when adjusted for inflation, with a total of over $13 billion at 2011/12 prices.[13] If ancillary income from merchandising is included, then Star Wars is the most lucrative franchise, earning more than $22 billion in total, with direct income from the films themselves accounting for just one third of overall revenues.[14][15] At constant prices the live-action Star Wars films are also the most consistent performers, earning on average more per film than any other series,[12] while Peter Jackson'sMiddle-Earth series is the nominal record-holder, averaging at about $980 million with each film earning in excess of $870 million.
† Background shading indicates that at least one film in the series is playing in the week commencing 6 December 2024 in theaters around the world.
Version 2.0 is similar to Version 1.0 above, except that it incorporates film series that, like Avatar, currently only contain one film. This allows a person to compare, e.g., the gross revenue of the eight Harry Potter films to the one Avatar films. This also demonstrates the power of, e.g., a film like Avatar, in that it, despite only containing a single film, still succeeds in grossing higher than other series that have far more films in them (e.g., the Fast/Furious series, which has six films, compared to Avatar's one).
Prior to 2000, only seven series had grossed over $1 billion at the box office: James Bond,[16]Star Wars,[17]Indiana Jones,[18]Rocky,[19][20][21]Batman,[22]Jurassic Park[23] and Star Trek.[24] Since the turn of the century that number has increased to over thirty;[11] this is partly due to inflation and market growth, but also to Hollywood's adoption of the franchise model: films that have built-in brand recognition, such as being based on a well known literary source (The Lord of the Rings) or an established character (Indiana Jones). The methodology is based on the concept that films associated with things audiences are already familiar with can be more effectively marketed to them, and as such are known as "pre-sold" films within the industry.[12] The Harry Potter series has grossed the most, amassing nearly $8 billion over eight films at the box office, although the EONJames Bond series is the highest grossing when adjusted for inflation, with a total of over $13 billion at 2011/12 prices.[25] If ancillary income from merchandising is included, then Star Wars is the most lucrative franchise, earning more than $22 billion in total, with direct income from the films themselves accounting for just one third of overall revenues.[26][15] At constant prices the live-action Star Wars films are also the most consistent performers, earning on average more per film than any other series,[12] while Peter Jackson'sMiddle-Earth series is the nominal record-holder, averaging at about $980 million with each film earning in excess of $870 million.

The James Bond series was the first to gross over a billion dollars, and is still the highest-grossing after adjusting for inflation.
Prior to 2000, only seven series had grossed over $1 billion at the box office: James Bond,[76] Star Wars,[77] Indiana Jones,[78] Rocky,[79][80][81] Batman,[82] Jurassic Park[83] and Star Trek.[84] Since the turn of the century that number has increased to over thirty;[85] this is partly due to inflation and market growth, but also to Hollywood's adoption of the franchise model: films that have built-in brand recognition, such as being based on a well known literary source (The Lord of the Rings) or an established character (Indiana Jones). The methodology is based on the concept that films associated with things audiences are already familiar with can be more effectively marketed to them, and as such are known as "pre-sold" films within the industry.[25] The Harry Potter series has grossed the most, amassing nearly $8 billion over eight films at the box office, although the EON James Bond series is the highest grossing when adjusted for inflation, with a total of over $13 billion at 2011/12 prices.[86] If ancillary income from merchandising is included, then Star Wars is the most lucrative franchise, earning more than $22 billion in total, with direct income from the films themselves accounting for just one third of overall revenues.[10][87] At constant prices the live-action Star Wars films are also the most consistent performers, earning on average more per film than any other series,[25] while Peter Jackson's Middle-Earth series is the nominal record-holder, averaging at about $980 million with each film earning in excess of $870 million.
Background shading indicates that at least one film in the series is playing in the week commencing 09 August 2013 in theaters around the world.
