Not all adaptations

The article stated, "The show has brought a large number of detective series and television movies — most of them British productions from the BBC or various ITV companies, and all adapted from literary sources."

This is not correct. The series Jericho, for example, was originally created for Granada Television. It is not based on a literary source. 71.162.248.100 14:23, 17 October 2007 (UTC)

Gay investigator?

Who is the gay investigator? He's tall with very short blonde hair. Sleepy eyes. He is revealed as being gay in the anti-gay hate crime episode. Not sure what exact season(s) he's all in, but I'm watching one right now and Alan Cumming is the host. --RyanTee82 (talk) 09:21, 13 October 2009 (UTC)

Title

The show used all caps for its entire run before being absorbed into Masterpiece. There is nothing wrong with making readers aware of that. As can be seen in the bibliography Ron Miller's book about the series is titled MYSTERY!: A Celebration If one wanted to insist we could justifiably move the article to all caps since we have precedent with articles like WALL-E and BASEketball. While I wouldn't insist on that I would think it a nice compromise that we leave the parenthetical in the lede. If you want more input you could certainly ask at the wikiproject for television. Praying Mantis

not sure it quite works to link to Mantis (redirect from Praying Mantis) rather than something more TV/film specific for this one. There is an article on two other Wikis (e.g. Богомол @ Wikipedia (ru) about what may be the same film as was presented on MYSTERY! in 84-85 (though it says 1982 film). Thanks for posting about this. You are correct that the link went to an unrelated article. I have fixed it per our naming conventions. The reason for the difference in years is that all programs that aired on MYSTERY! were purchased from the various UK production companies (BBC, ITV etc) sometime after the had aired in the UK. In the 70s and 80s 2 to 5 years might pass before they aired on this program. Since then air dates have gotten much closer and most programs air within a few months of the showing in England. Masterpiece Mystery - new series name?

IMDB claims "Masterpiece Mystery" is the USA (new title).^[1] Unfortunately, IMDB is a user contributed site much like Wikipedia but does not show sources/citations nor do they disclose how they verify user-submitted information. Thus, I don't have a WP:RS for the name "Masterpiece Mystery" though nave not looked to see if one is available. Are Mystery! episodes always reruns of episodes from other series?

This article confuses me - I get the sense that Mystery! is comprised entirely or mostly of reruns? Do they ever air original content?

A scan of the Mystery! episodes shows that they have run 10 of the 25 Foyle's War episodes. A spot check of the Broken Souls episode shows that the USA airdate for both the Foyle's War and Mystery! editions was 20 July 2008 for the USA.

The Foyle's War article has a section, without citations, that claims:

Each episode runs for about 95 to 100 minutes, filling a two-hour time slot on ITV when commercials are included. To fit its PBS 90-minute time slot in the United States (originally part of the Mystery! series – now called Masterpiece Mystery), the episodes, particularly in Series 1–3, were shortened by several minutes each.

Is Mystery! always reruns, possibly abridged, of episodes for other series? If so, that should be made clearer in the article. --Marc Kupper|talk 01:21, 15 October 2013 (UTC)

They aren't reruns. The are shows that have already aired in the UK but are airing in the US for the first time. MarnetteD | Talk 02:32, 15 October 2013 (UTC)

Undo revisions

I just undid the recent deletion of most of the new text posted to the Mystery! page by another contributor, cleader. I thought that cleader's contributions to this page added a lot of knowledge from published sources that is helpful to readers interested in Mystery! and greatly deepened and substantiated the good basic information that was already up there. There may be some errors or statements that could use editing, but overall it is well-sourced and informative. It did not seem OTT to me -- not sure what the previous editor meant by that.
