reason Mike's site went down
[edit]Mike's site went down because Web traffic exceeded bandwidth limitations. Unfortunately, this happened after Matt extended thanks from the family for all of the well wishes that had been posted. I'm pretty sure it will be up again in a week or so after things settle down and the family can deal with everything. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Donssword (talk • contribs)
Images
[edit]That really should be an image of his creator-owned Tellos at the top right. It's only fitting to have his most notable self-created work there.
That would also allow the Flash cover to be moved to the Flash section and to the right, because images are not supposed to look off the page, according to basic rules of layout and design. --69.22.254.111 13:58, 14 August 2007 (UTC)
- Took care of your concern about the layout, but article could still use a Tellos picture and one of Wieringo. Ichormosquito 08:16, 15 August 2007 (UTC)
Aug. 20 edits
[edit]I restored the original image since the replacement was both oversized, resulting in a particularly "bowling lane layout," and since the subjects were looking off the page, which is basic bad graphic design. And the biblio is for books about Wieringo. We don't list every reprint collection an artist has ever appeared in -- the Jack Kirby or Joe Sinnot or Neal Adams lists, for instance, would be endless. And listing the reprint collections smacks of promotion for them. -- 69.22.254.111 15:17, 20 August 2007 (UTC)
Picture added and college education corrected
[edit]I added Mike's self-portrait. The image was released by Mike's brother, Matt, for use on Mike's Wiki page. Mike owned all intellectual rights to this self portrait, and it was not copyrighted to any publisher.
I also fixed the college education reference from the Richmond Comix interview: Mike was never accepted into the Illustration tract of Communication Art & Design at VCU, so he entered Fashion Illustration, in the Fashion Department, where he studied with a number of professors including Donald Early. Donald closely mentored Mike's education, recognizing Mike's intense dedication to his craft, and helped Mike hone his figure drawing skills, knowing that Mike intended to pursue a career in comic books. This is refenced in his interview with The ComicBloc [1]
VCU's CA&D department, at that time, did not accept comic book illustration as a legitimate form of visual design (despite VCU's library possessing a prestigious comic book collection [2] ), and years later tried to recruit Mike to teach illustration -- an offer he never took up. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Donssword (talk • contribs) 00:14, 5 January 2008 (UTC)Donssword (talk) 19:26, 27 January 2008 (UTC)

Unsourced material in need of sourcing
[edit]I've moved the following unsourced material here from the article until it can be properly sourced per WP:V, WP:NOR, WP:RS, et al. Mike Wieringo was born in Italy and raised in Lynchburg, Virginia--an American citizen from birth, with dual citizenship in Italy until he was 18.[1] He attended Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia, USA, graduating with a degree in fashion illustration,[2] and broke into comics as a penciler with the Millennium Publications series Pat Savage and Doc Savage: Doom Dynasty in 1991. Two years later, he penciled the cover of the anthology comic book Negative Burn #1 (1993), from Caliber Press.
Wieringo broke into mainstream publisher DC Comics penciling the cover and co-penciling (with Lee Moder) the 30-page Justice League International lead story in Justice League Quarterly #11 (Summer 1993). Wieringo then penciled a 13-page backup feature starring the superheroines Doctor Light and Ice in Justice League Quarterly #12 (Autumn 1993). In a late 1990s interview, Wieringo recalled that
“ Brian Stelfreeze and Karl Story, the guys at Gaijin Studios ... lined the [Millennium] job up for me, because I had met them at [comics conventions] over the years and showed them my work. They got some of my samples and sent them to the guy and [he] liked them and gave me the job. ... From there, it was dry for a while, and I did some more samples and took them to [Comic-Con International in] San Diego in 1992, and about October that year, I got a call from Ruben Diaz, who was an assistant editor at DC at the time, [who] asked me to do a Justice League Quarterly story. When I started doing that, they asked me to do another one, and while I was in the process of finishing the second one, they asked me if I'd be interested in taking over The Flash because the artist had just left. ”

re: Unsourced material in need of sourcing
[edit]I don't understand your intention with the removal of this content. Not everything needs to be sourced. The place of birth and geographic details of home/life/origin were posted by Mike's family. Short of posting Mike's birth certificate, I don't know why it needs to be "sourced"--you could link it to geographic birthing and government data supplied by the county/city of residence, but I don't find that is often done in Wiki listings, and most of that data is behind "pay walls."
I'm going to dig around and see if I can link to other sources where links are broken, as you requested, but I'm not too good and working with Wiki, esp footnotes and sourcing, and might not get it all perfect. IMHO, removing content from bios just because you are of the opinion that it might not be the truth seems a little too subjective to me. Donssword (talk) 12:07, 28 June 2011 (UTC)
