History of the company

[edit]

The company was founded in Dessau at easter 1859 the welding and fitting specialist (ger.: Schlossermeister) Andreas Ernst Gottfried Polysius together with an apprentice opened a welding shop in Dessau and so laid the foundation of a fitting and welding shop mainly to fabricate treasuries (moneykeeping furnitures) - the foundation of an internationally acting company. On May 23, 1870 he also founded the G. Polysius Eisengießerei und Maschinenfabrik (machinery fabrication and cast iron works), which established itself by mills of own design and fabrication into the young and fast growing industry of cement fabrication. Beneath of treasuries they also built sieves and lifting equipment.

Polysius also fabricated crop mills, equipment for breweries and distilleries. He was very engagend in the upcoming sugar industry and specialized in cutting and milling equipment. The beginning production of cement fabricating machinery was a milestone in the company’s history.

After the founder’s death his sons Otto and Max Polysius lead the company. 1898 they designed and manufactured the first rotary kiln for cement fabrication in Europe. 1907 Polysius commissioned the first complete cement fabric of Polysius design. 1912 Polysius built the Jesabruch works for the Prüssing group of cement plants.

At the end of the 1920ies Dr. Georg Lellep developped the LEPOL® process system together with his colleague Dipl.-Ing. Bernd Helming, a process which was a revolution for the cement fabricating industry by saving energy for burning and fuel consumption by a third.

Development after the 2nd WW

[edit]

After WW II Polysius started 1946 again in Dessau. At the same time Bernd Helming and Dr. Curt Prüssing, a son in law of Max Polysius, founded the “Westpol GmbH” (company) in Beckum, western Germany which was renamed to Polysius GmbH three years later. Dr. Prüssing and Bernd Helming also were the CEOs after the conversion to a public share company. The Dessau plant 1946 was expropriated by the soviet military and converted to a VEB Zementanlagen (cement plants, works in peoples’ ownership).[1]

10 years after the restart Polysius employed 600 employees in Germany and other countries. 1971 the Fried. Krupp GmbH in Essen bought the capital majority of Polysius. 1992 the Polysius AG was integrated into the Krupp engineering division - a structure of the Krupp-Hoesch group. 140 years after the foundation, 1999, there was the fusioning of Thyssen AG and Krupp to ThyssenKrupp AG. Polysius since then is a subsidiary of the international group ThyssenKrupp Technologies.

Since 1946 the main center of activites of the Polysius AG is in the westphalian Beckum, Germany. Polysius bought the chalk kiln prodcer Maerz AG in Zurich, Switzerland, and the AC Equipment Corp., USA. In Neubeckum Polysius employs around 1300 employees; worldwide there are planning and engineering capacities in southern France, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, USA, South Africa, India, Malaysia, Singapore and China, around 2000 employees. In Neubeckum there is an outstanding fabrication floorshop (for engineering companies) used for core components of the heat transfer technology, milling technologies, dosing and weighing equipment with 150 employees. In Pimpri/Poona, India the Poylsius group has an engineering subsidiary and a welding and mechanical cutting floorshop with 4000 employees nearby. In 2010 another factory will start working near Shanghai.

In October 2009 the 150-years anniversay was celebrated with a three-days-celebration for customers, subsidiaries, contract partners, employees and retired employees.[2]
