How could have they started their LD service in 1986 when I have Sprint long distance bills (NYC to Boston service) from 1983?X570 06:26, 27 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This whole thing needs corrected. I worked at Sprint's local telephone division for 10 years. Sprint was created in the 1980s, after deregulation. It was the creation of United Telephone, which exists nowhere in Wikipedia, and GTE as a 50/50 venture into the newly created long distance market. It was during this period the company launched the successful Candice Bergman ad campaign. During the late 80s United Telephone purchased GTE's half of the company and decided the success of the Bergman ads was so great the Sprint brand carried more value than the United Telephone brand. Because of this, United Telephone applied the Sprint brand to it's local operations, formally named United Telephone. There was a whole migration of the brand. First it was United Telephone of <state name> a Sprint Company, then Sprint - United of <state name> and finally Sprint. However, the United Telephone companies still exist as regulated local telephone entries in each state they did operations; United of Florida, United of Ohio (where I was at), United of Indiana and so on. These are what was spun off by Sprint when Embarq was created, which is also listed out here. Both Sprint and Embarq are management companies for the United Telephone companies in each state which for the better part of a century were known as United Telephone.

I'll have to make an entry for all of United Telephone so the history is not lost, or rewritten. --Kcukrowicz 04:32, 2 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Disagree: This company, as well as that of NEXTEL Communications, is long enough that it warrants its own article. AEMoreira042281 12:56, 15 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Agree: Sprint Nextel, Sprint Corporation, and NEXTEL Communications have enough information to remain as separate articles. --Supergeek2therescue 16:28, 1 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Agree: This article is essentially a repeat article of the Sprint history section of Sprint Nextel. Since Sprint Nextel is the Sprint Corporation renamed, this article should be merged. KansasCity 17:25, 2 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Agree: This company never stopped existing. The merger of Sprint and Nextel was actually a purchase of Nextel by Sprint, after which Sprint renamed itself Sprint Nextel. Saudaqeta 00:26, 13 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Agree: This Article should be merged, as the current company is the legal continuation of Sprint Corporation, but NEXTEL should remain separate as it was a totally seperate company, fro ma legal standpoint. oknazevad 19:45, 20 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
