A sandbox is an enclosed area filled with sand that allows children to play in it without distributing the sand over a wider area, which would affect both the efficacy of the sand as a playing tool and the wider area which is not supposed to contain any sand.

History

For millenia children would play with sand or other soil material as it was freely available and afforded many opportunities for creative play.

Sand is the stuff, of which empires are made. [1]
